POIS Research / Re: New POIS Survey from University of Chicago - Please fill it out!
« Last post by demografx on November 22, 2024, 08:17:06 PM »

I'm positive about any POIS research at all and maybe it will lead to a 2nd survey one day.

UMass (Univ. of Massachusetts) Medical School conducted a successful 2024 survey here, “The Psychosocial Aspects of POIS”.

You can search it here at the forum, or contact the PI (Principal Investigator),

Hi Hopeoneday.
I found your chart interesting. In particular, I wonder why a higher % of people with black skin have low neutrophils than people with white skin or Hispanics? Do you think it would be of interest to know if poisers of any demographic with neutropenia have something in common genetically with people with black skin with neutropenia? Also, would it be interesting to know the demographic of poisers with neutropenia? Maybe you've looked into these things already?

Thanks Demo and The University of Chicago
Yes thanks, I made use of the additional info field at the end.
Some of my thoughts about the survey were along the lines of carlo_francesco's comments (see above).
I appreciate it's difficult to get these things right to please everyone.
Yes, I think the survey could have been better but overall, I think it's brilliant that The University of Chicago are doing this and will look forward to reading the results.

Sisyphus, thanks for your excellent perspective on waiting for POIS correlates to be proven/disproven. Scientifically!

You're welcome Demo. I'm fascinated by medical research (what I can understand of it!).

General POIS Discussions / Re: I went to the doctor about pois and....
« Last post by Sisyphus on November 22, 2024, 10:49:47 AM »
See previous post.

I was quite disappointed to be so abruptly discharged from the hospital clinic by the Allergy Specialist recently and it left me thinking that Iwillbeatthis might be right after all, that doctors are a waste of time when it comes to POIS. On the other hand, I've tried to have a more positive approach about everything in recent years so I decided not to give up and instead got a new set of general blood tests which are at this link:-
https://poiscenter.com/forums/index.php?topic=2684.msg49723#msg49723

I decided I wanted to discuss the results with my general doctor and to my surprise I got a phone appt with him straightaway which took place this morning. The outcome of the phone appt was as follows:-
My doctor is going to consult with his colleagues about my high transferrin saturation and haemochromatosis gene test to see what they recommend.
My doctor is going to re-test my PTH and a few other things.
My doctor is interested in the above. He's sceptical about POIS (had not heard of it) but acknowledges that the Allergy Specialist thinks I have POIS.
What I'm wondering is, could all of the above be linked? Or will this once again prove to be a dead end for my POIS research?

I will update in due course.

Anyone else been to a doctor about POIS recently and care to share what happened?

My most recent bi-annual blood test results anomalies, similar results to previous tests (reference ranges in parantheses). See associated discussion thread for comments about these results:-

neutrophils 1.89 (2 to 7.5 10⁹/L)
bilirubin 45.41 (<21 μmol/l)
transferrin saturation 75 (20 to 50%)
iron 40.1 (5.9 to 34.5 μmol/l)
blood glucose 3.61 (4 to 6 mmol/l)
testosterone 35.6 (6.681 to 25.7 nmol/l)
PTH 1.0 (1.7 to 6.9 pmol/l)

Hi Sisyphus,
Not definitive. Just an “FYI”
PerplexityAI on PTH and POIS:
https://www.perplexity.ai/search/low-pth-and-pois-4tqd8u6iQnSdFIn5w4tK5A

“Low levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH) can lead to hypoparathyroidism, a condition characterized by low calcium and high phosphorus levels in the blood. Symptoms include muscle cramps, twitching, and fatigue. Causes of hypoparathyroidism include surgical removal or damage to the parathyroid glands, autoimmune disorders, and genetic conditions. Treatment typically involves lifelong calcium and vitamin D supplementation to maintain normal mineral levels.
POIS (Post-Orgasmic Illness Syndrome) is unrelated to PTH. It is a condition where men experience flu-like symptoms after ejaculation. The causes of POIS are not well understood, and it is a rare condition.”

Hi Demo
Thanks for getting back to me. Thanks for the info on PTH. I'm not surprised that AI does not connect PTH with POIS. It will probably be proven one day that there is no connection between the two but until then, I prefer to keep a completely open mind about my POIS including all theories, causes, symptoms, everything, including PTH, until more research is done.

high transferrin saturation
...
Regarding high transferrin saturation, I've had a gene test for hemochromatosis which was negative.

Did you also measure ferritin?
What was your transferrin saturation?
Which genes were tested for hemochromatosis, can you say the exact results? You might have symptoms even with heterozygous mutations.

I got the details about my gene test from my doctor. Actually, the gene test seems to be semi positve in that I'm a carrier but there's only one copy. It says:-
Analysis has detected one copy of the heterozygous HFE variant c.187C>Gp.(his63Asp). The c.845G>A p.(Cys282Tyr) sequence variant was not detected.
The result confirms that this patient is a carrier of the c.187C>Gp.(his63Asp) variant in the HFE gene. The diagnosis of the most common HFE-related HH is excluded. Other causes of iron overload should be considered.
Hi Berlin, See above and if you need more info, please send me a PM.
