Registration questions are terrible
« on: July 19, 2018, 08:59:58 PM »
Those questions are the most terrible thing I have ever seen in that regard. E.g. "what is b/f" - oookaay... Someone is having fun playing around. Only by googling and coming back to this site did I finally find the answer. But then it changed to "who is the admin" - not likely to be number 1 knowledge if one isn't even registered yet, now is it? Also rather narcissistic. By the way I only found the answer to that absurd "b/f" game question because there are so many complaints here already... And what is it trying to achieve, exactly? It certainly pointlessly annoys people, which I suppose is circularly seens as some arcane purpose (as many admins have such a twisted psychology and effectively like to "troll"with their power).
And oh look, there are more captchas and the question again... This is pathological.
Anyway... Erm... Hi. (?!)

Hi mxh, and welcome to the forum.

Registration answers had to be not so obvious, because we had hundreds of unwanted registrations a week by spammers, and had to make it more difficult to register. We were infested with spammers, bots and fake members.   To give you an idea, we had 200 to 400 new "members" a week, which was obviously impossible for a rare condition like POIS.  At one point, this little forum, which has currently approx 650 members, had over 14 000 members ! ... a huge pruning had to be done.   It is maybe due to some word search that is done by bots... we do find words here like "orgasm" or "ejaculation" or "prostate"... that is maybe what attracts bots here.

Now, gone are the days when we come to the forum in the morning only to find 14 threads of foreign languages porn ads......

Sorry for the inconvenience, we understand that the registration process is a little harder, but it was really needed.

10 years of significant POIS-reduction, treatment consisting of daily (365 days/year) testosterone patches.

TRT must be checked out carefully with your doctor due to fertility, cardiac and other risks.

40+ years of severe 4-days-POIS, married, raised a family, started/ran a business

It took my 1 Week to reg back then(almost gave up), I would say we need a better solution to this PROBLEM, how about a link to the answers of the questions near by the question (about should not be able to finde them in another hyperlink) also a reminder of how backspace and uppercase needs to be used.

I understand why it is made difficult to sign in, but I also faced the same difficulties mxh faced when I tried to sign up. I got a lot of errors, before I finally succeeded. I think this procedure prevents some POIS'ers from joining the forum.

Hi Julius,

Now there are now 4 different possible questions, so anyone should at least be able to answer one of these ( they appear randomly on each new attempt to register).

In addition, I have put my e-mail address at the bottom of the registration agreement page, for help in case of problems in the registration process. It is visible before being registered, so anyone who has problem to register just have to send me an e-mail, I usually answer within 24 hours or so.

Enable manual user registration. I have one of my sites moderators review each registration because we get a lot of spam too. Using Cloud Flare has helped with that a lot too because it allows us to restrict spammy IPs. I run a MyBB forum but I'm sure a simple machines forum has similar Plugins that make it hard for bots to register. At the end of the day, you're driving away real people who want help with their condition because they are too annoyed to want to post. This forum is dissapointingly empty and I suspect that is the primary reason why.

Interesting suggestion, but not applicable here.  When I first arrived here, and than became a moderator, we had around 200 registrations a week, and about 14000 members, and only 650 of them were legit, real members, the rest were spammers accounts.  Bots are attracted here because we use a lot of words like "orgasm", "semen", prostate", "masturbation", and so on ( which, I guess, may not be the case on your forum).  we often had porn threads created overnight, spamming the forum.  Now this is over, as well as the 200 hundreds false new members a week.

We do not have the resources to manually review all the applications.  If you, or anyone else, are interested in taking the responsibility to do this approval work manually, just contact me.  For now, our limited resources are highly needed on other essential tasks.

And, keep in mind that registering is only needed for posting - all forum content is accessible to anybody, member or not.
Apart from that, this forum is not empty. Keep in mind that POIS is a very rare syndrome, and not well known to the public, so it wouldn't be normal to have those 14000 members we had when I became moderator ( that is exactly what led me to take a closer look at the registrations and the registration process).  I have POIS for around 40 years now, and found this forum only 5 years ago.  I was quite surprised to not be the only one with this, and many others have that same impression, because POIS is not very much talked about. Slowly, things change and POIS sufferers find us.
However, this is not like having a forum about old muscle cars, or about a disease like asthma, or any subject from mainstream culture. We will not attract attract people by the thousand.  And, above all, members often undergo extreme fatigue and/or cognitive problems, due to POIS, which keep them from participating more on the forum.
Questions have been made easier lately, so this will help with the process.  Anyway, if any problem, my e-mail is showed during the registration process, and is also written in a specific thread on the Technical Support Board.  So, anyone can e-mail me at quantum "at" videotron.ca ( just replace the "at" by @ , of course ;)  ) if they have problem registering.
