Vagus Nerve Stimulation
« on: June 14, 2018, 07:17:05 PM »
My POIS has been almost non-existent this year, up until about 2 months ago, when our winter here in Chile started. Well late fall.

There are two things that complicate my POIS: weather systems ( in summer there aren't any here ) and lack of sun. In summer we have tons of sun, like 3 months of NO clouds.

But in summer thanks to viagra, I basically had zero POIS. ( As long as I didn't do it more tan twice in a week.)

Now it lasts a full 7 days and like most it gets better almost overnight on the 7th day.

I've really noticed that it seems to severely affect the vagus nerve. all symptoms are concentrated in the thorax, from the groin up to the throat.

I don't think that the vagus nerve is the activator, but it is certainly most affected by POIS inflamation.

I still feel it's Auto-immune related (NOT ALLERGY) and blame my vasectomy and later reversal. Everything started about 4 yrs after the reversal.

I think that VNS should probably help relieve the symptoms, but probably not cure the illness.

WITHOUT RESEARCH THERE WILL BE NO CURE!
Sessions 5 to 9 days, mostly Flu-like, joints, digestion problems, light cognitive.
Niacin has changed my lif though, now 1 day MAX.
Somewhere in this interaction with Niacin is the answer!

Well, that's really interesting. I don't know if we have people who have said that it affects them in those areas, it would be interesting to read other experiences.

We can agree that Vitamin-D and good weather seems to be a positive factor for almost all POIS-ers.

Are you planning to try a VNS , Daveman?

Hi Observer!

Most of my worst reactions this fall/winter have been more centered from the uper intestines to the throat and neck.

I think that most of us probably feel congestion. Me, throat, nose, eyes, even arteries, probably manifested as vaso-constriction. When I eat breakfast, especialy the first morning, I feel as thoughit's hard to swallow. Sometimes, it's like if I rush, things get stuck in the throat and I have to force it down with water, which is REALY uncomfortable.

I have a cronic condition in my neck as well (probably from my position on the computer most of my life). That swels and pinches nerves etc.

The vegus nerve passes around the caretoid aretery and throat. With the swelling the nerve gets squeezed. Aso I feel as though the nerves in my neck are quite related to the stability of the heart.

I have bad reflux in the esofagus (SP?) as well. Nerve pains in the abdomen, and general discomfort in the abdomen and chest,

Not to mention watery eyes, ringing ears. Lasts a week, almost to the day.

One good piece of news!! I have been taking vitamin D for two weeks, and recently (last night - fathers' day  ;D ) and today I feel pretty good, much better than I have felt. Just hands going to sleep in the night.

There was a bit of sun yesterday and more today, I'm going to activate my Vit. D  :D )

Not sure I'll try a VNS, kinda expensive. I made a muscle stimulator a few years back.... had thought about resurecting that project.... but alas, time.....

Hi Dave, all this up you mention i hawe 100% the same and worst, that is MG symptomes like.
Simply, esopagus muscules ant troat muscules , dont respond to will power, and make wery uncofordable feling( if you contunue cewing and swalofing it is feel like you choke, and then is conected to heart to) wery unconfordable.
Than you can fell artrial fibrilation etc.
I trying for years to figure out what is this and what can so disturbed neurologicly.

I notice that you also the same like me do eletronic, that mean that you also do welding electronics ad you are exposed to lead wire and fumes from flux and fumes from modher board chips etc.

I am trying to resarch posible delayed alergy from toxins exposure to fumes from flux(califomium and odhers cemical fluxes) , lead wire , fumes from chips(brominated flame retardans etc).

10 years of significant POIS-reduction, treatment consisting of daily (365 days/year) testosterone patches.

TRT must be checked out carefully with your doctor due to fertility, cardiac and other risks.

40+ years of severe 4-days-POIS, married, raised a family, started/ran a business

Dave is a scientist in his own realm, but I was referring to Dr. Barry Komisaruk and his scientific team at Rutgers University, who studied POIS and concluded that the vagus nerve may be implicated in POIS symptoms, if not the root cause of POIS might be discovered.

Much further study is needed.

My POIS only happens with masturbation. Normal sex does not generate POIS symptoms. My POIS is related to me mood and the health of my cervical spine. Dopamine/Inflammation/Body constitution (genetics) are factors that contribute to POIS.

I have stopped arrythmia, at least temporarily by massaging around the carotid artery and from the throat along under the "shoulder-bones".

I've also tried messaging the same part of the ear where they use the VNS machine. But that seems to have less effect. Of course the machine probably has a "deeper" reach.

The most people and what is most sad thing that 99% of doctors dont know this.
My pshyhologist told me tha all that i imagine and that is not posible and not exist,
because he hawe 40 years expirience.

If i was in chance to meat this doctor 20 years ago, my life would be much easier to live today.

What helps me is relax head muscles, and the jaw. It's almost as if stiff muscles in the neck/jaw/face are obstructing normal blood circulation.

(Any other people with sleep-bruxism aka teeth-clenching, here?)
Male, INTJ. POIS symptoms: red eyes, ear-pain, anxiety, speech problems, pale/ugly skin, stiff neck, double chin, tinnitus, light sensitivity. POIS even after stimulation without O.

I have sleep-bruxism. But I think everyone here has. It is caused by muscle tension. When my spine and neck are ok, my sleep-bruxism is weaker.

Hi Fernando,

This is very interesting to know. I have sleep bruxism since I was 16 years old.

For me it really feels as if the muscles in my head are tense all the time, and not just my jaw.

I always feel worst in the morning.

The treatment that works to relieve my bruxism is the same as preventing POIS. In this order:
1. Postural treatment.
2. Aerobic exercise.
3. Meditation.
4. Natural soothing herbs.

Hi Fernando,

Thanks! That post you linked to makes a lot of sense.

Coincidentally, I've been visiting a physiotherapist since about a month or so, because of my ear problems (which by the way become terrible after O). This therapist specializes in head muscles, and bruxism as well. He is also working on my back, and trapezius muscles. I have also been working on my posture (I sit behind a computer all day) I am already seeing some improvements. So this all makes sense.

The breathing exercise proposed by FloppyBanana also helps me a lot, especially when I combine it with relaxation of the head and jaw. Basically, I imagine there is a muscle at the top of my head, and I'm trying to relax that muscle as much as I can (this requires a lot of concentration); at a certain point the muscle is completely relaxed, and it feels like there is a pancake laying on my head; it feels as if more blood is flowing through my head. Combined with the breathing exercise, where I hold my breath for as long as possible, I notice that near the end of the exercise (when I start to run out of oxygen), the vessels in my head start to dilate.

Further, I've had some success in the past with a supplement called vinpocetine, which is supposed to improve blood circulation in the brain. I stopped taking it because a ban of the FDA is looming.

Anyway, thanks again! Very helpful comment!
