Can be psychosis a symptom of POIS?
« on: April 26, 2011, 03:52:50 AM »
I never read about psychosis related to POIS, although some of symptoms might match that of psychosis. And from what I've read it seems that POIS might modify the levels of dopamine. From wikipedia article about psychosis it seem that psychosis is related to dopamine.

Have anyone of you being diagnosed with some form of psychosis since you have started to have POIS?

I find it actually very interesting, that POIS victims don't suffer anything more than a mild depression and some sadness here and there.

As one guy put it : "When you're in POIS, your sensory perception, emotions and the feelings of reality are so dull, you're actually unable to have a real deep psychological problem other than being maybe just a bit obsessive about things in general and having this flight-or-flight mode that makes you feel so irritated that you want to tear down your physical body so it stops sending alert signals to the brain."

POIS might cause psychotic depression in some cases (It hasn't in my case.), but psychotic depression is certainly not the cause of POIS. And if all of your symptoms are only present after orgasm and go away when you abstain from orgasm for a number of days then your symptoms are from POIS not depression.

I myself don't believe I even have clinical depression. I just get sad sometimes when POIS restricts my ability to do the things I used to love to do.

My opinion is biased however, because I absolutely despise it when someone whether they be a doctor, scientist, or otherwise assumes out of ignorance that a genuine physical malady is merely in the sufferer's head.

When I went to the psychiatrist he told me that I might have a psychotic depression.

I never read about psychosis related to POIS, although some of symptoms might match that of psychosis. And from what I've read it seems that POIS might modify the levels of dopamine. From wikipedia article about psychosis it seem that psychosis is related to dopamine.

Have anyone of you being diagnosed with some form of psychosis since you have started to have POIS, or as in my case a psychotic depression (which is a depression with a mild psychosis on top)?

I have to mention that after a year and a half treatment for psychotic depression my health haven't returned to normal. I think that my symptoms are more likely related to POIS.

I don't think that psychosis is a direct result of POIS but I think it can stem off of the symptoms it brings. In my case, my POIS has gotten worse over the years and the cognitive symptoms are constent and neverending. Over time they have given my symptoms such as confusion, perception problems, alertness deficiency, slurred words, trouble communicating, trouble understanding what people are sayin, just completely out of whack stuff. These things have led to further issues and now I have trouble communicating at all and can't focus on anything. I think that POIS affects so many that that the stem off possibilities are endless.
My cognitive symptoms started suddenly during an orgasm when I was 16. I then developed my POIS and cognitive/physical symptoms became very severe. Had to leave work and school. This year I had 60% success with regimen. Recently the symptoms have gotten worse again. Let's help each other.

Thank you for replies.

To Jon,

I am myself, simillar to your description, becouse my mental and other symptoms never passed away from firts appearance of POIS.
You couldn't write something more true, about how it feels.
I don't think it is a true psychosis, but a doctor who don't know about POIS, might assume a wrong condition.
I have cognitive, psychological and physical symptoms.
I am apologizing for my English if it is unclear.

It's typical that POIS ignorant doctors resort to diagnosis of psychosis or psychosomatic etc. Too typical!

POIS is an illness in itself and that's that! It's true, it may exist over (in parallel with) psychosis, depression or whatever else. It's also true that it's very likely to exagerate of any of these other potential problems.

In my case, there is no history in my family of any of these things, I've got a very strong "head" in that sense, yet on a couple of occasions at the peak of POIS, I felt on the verge of going out of my head!

And in a day or two, back to a good solid normal.

We have to go to the doctor's loaded with information, and if they're not prepared to look at it or take it into account, they've got a bigger problem than we do.

The only way to look at it. Turn around and walk out.

WITHOUT RESEARCH THERE WILL BE NO CURE!
Sessions 5 to 9 days, mostly Flu-like, joints, digestion problems, light cognitive.
Niacin has changed my lif though, now 1 day MAX.
Somewhere in this interaction with Niacin is the answer!

I agree with you Daveman that there are many doctors who will treat the problem as only a mental problem, and ignore the rest.  But I think we agree that it has a significant mental component- and for some of us it is more severe than in others. So it is a potential cause of depression and even maybe psychosis. A lot of us have tried the dopamine and seratonin medications because of our symptoms.

You're right, and in posts after my first quoted reference here, it has become clearer how parallel afflictions ALSO need attention.

On one side, if the doctor says, "You know what, I really don't know much about POIS, and perhaps we can get you better attention somewhere, but in the meantime, perhaps THIS might help some of your symptoms", well at least he's not an idiot. And there's no doubt, even if we don't have a cure, a relief is welcomed.

It's when they call us crazy and DON'T properly practice their profession that makes me mad!!
