Experiences with psychologists, psychiatrists
« on: July 23, 2020, 11:54:48 AM »
I don't want to advocate going to psychologists or psychiatrists, nor do I believe they would know what to do. I am interested in experiences with psychologists and psychiatrists as someone who has POIS. The reason is that they are judgmental and judge everything schematically. A "bad day" is for them not just a bad day but everything about you and a much more serious condition that they think they know everything about. Disagreement or argument at this point is no longer possible (and as an action is automatically made a part of your supposed issue).
That means, they are actually difficult and risky people to deal, and that one has to "impress" them, certainly in the first impression, or they might lead you down a path that is not within your interest or has not anything to do with your actual problems at all. So having a condition that can automatically give one a "bad day" is an extreme disadvantage when going to talks with such people.
I personally often had this issue, that when I went to a psychologist for a completely unrelated and specific reason, my POIS brainfog, posture problems and more difficult talking gave a worse impression and they immediately thought it was something completely different, giving me medication which ultimately harmed me more than normal POIS did, permanently.
So I am interested in what others have to say in terms of experiences with psychologists, psychiatrists, and if their POIS had impacted their interaction with them and how they dealt with POIS when going to such a talk.

I have had the same problem. It's hard for people that don't experience pois to understand what it does to a person. So they instantly label it with their limited knowledge. They also aren't able to judge it from a physical point. Which sometimes creates a difficult situation when they try to help. I've had multiple anti depressants, which made my problems worse as well. I also had and still have a hard time explaining my symptomps. I desperately want people to understand what I'm going thru so they can judge me to the best of their ability. Usually makes me explain it in 10 different ways which really doesn't help. Then I think it could be this, then I think this could help. So they lable me as autistic because that's all they know. The psycholigist did help me with the general practitioner though. The only time they took me serious at the doctor office was when I said my psycholigist suggested I get a physical exam. But she still persisted that my problem might all just be my autism. The psycholigist also helped me get a payment from the goverment for my "autism". Which definitely gives me some space. I personally never really had a lot of contact with my psychiatrist, and they always just thought that I was overstressed and instantly put me on numming medication. Which never helped. But overall if you want to treat this condition (if that's even possible) then you should just go to the doctor and try to find something. Psychologists are there just to ventilate your problems. And psychiatrist are a aption if you are really desperate and want to make your problem worse 9/10 times. This was all at the youth appartment though, and I will be experiencing adult appartment for the first time next month.

Tijmen, welcome to the forum!
10 years of significant POIS-reduction, treatment consisting of daily (365 days/year) testosterone patches.

TRT must be checked out carefully with your doctor due to fertility, cardiac and other risks.

40+ years of severe 4-days-POIS, married, raised a family, started/ran a business
