Suggestion for increasing Google visibility
« on: December 08, 2011, 10:44:32 AM »
Forums are usually a great way to get indexed by Google. Google loves unique content (original text), and there is plenty of it here.

One thing that may be affecting your Google rankings is your homepage poiscenter.com, which just says
Quote
Welcome to POIS Center - go to the Forum, here
.

Google gives a lot of emphasis to the words on the front page of any given site - as things stand, you aren't getting much credit for this. The deeper content is buried within a website, the less importance Google will assign to it. By having the frontpage on "level 1" and the forum index on "level 2", all the text content on the site is less significant (in Google's eyes).

There's an easy technical fix - just make http://poiscenter.com/forums/index.php your frontpage via your hosting provider. The end result should be that your site should appear higher up the google ranking for certain keywords after a few weeks.

Just a suggestion that might bring some new posters here without needing to rely on the TNS POIS forum thread. It might be that you plan on adding other content to the front page in the future, in which case my advice isn't much help  :) Congrats on getting up to 109 members already - the site is flourishing  :)

Thanks Hurray.

One advantage of getting references through NSF for the time being is this helps on the SPAM filtering. As our position on Google increases, the number of SPAM applications multiplies dramatically. I have a SPAM filter software which is yet to be installed, but meantime I'm not too anxious to bump up the heat.

Also, I do have plans to put more content on the main page... it's just taking time to get to it.

We've got some serious marketing pushes coming up, and at the same time there will be more architecture to support the surge.
WITHOUT RESEARCH THERE WILL BE NO CURE!

Somewhere in this interaction with Niacin is the answer!

The poiscenter site shows up on page 9 of google's search engine for my browser while the reddit and facebook sites are much higher ranked. Have any of the moderators tried Hurray's possible solution?

With the linux hosting I use, you just need to make a simple edit to the .htaccess file via FTP to do a redirect. A fee would hopefully not be involved.

It's a good idea that Muon has come up with - however, bear in mind that this may not be as effective in 2020 as it may have been in 2011  :) Search has moved on a lot in those 9 years.

Also, it would have the effect of making Daveman's front page less visible to visitors to the site.

Thanks, hurray, and Muon. In response to my request, our host provider is trying to just sell us a bunch of SEO services, so I’m passing for now.

Thinking about increasing the visibility of the syndrome here in Brazil, I was thinking about creating some videos for youtube in Portuguese talking about POIS, because there is almost no content talking about it and those that have show a very different reality (like for example, saying we are allergic to our sperm). I won't show my face, but I have good equipment for recording audio, I know how to edit videos and I know how YouTube works.

I feel unwell to do this, but sometimes I imagine someone looking for answers on the internet and unable to come up with anything, it is the least I can do.

I will talk about this forum too (if you have no problems, of course), because there is a lot of information here, for sure it has already helped me a lot and can help other people.

To everyone - -

From our hosting provider:

Hello Demo,

As an update, I could see your poiscenter.com have first rank in Google search, PFA, so there is no need to take any action further.
Do let us know if you have any queries.

Regards,
Nevin.

I think the main problem is that the forum link on the main site is a javascript(?) link or something.

Just hover over it with your mouse, it just shows "#"
https://poiscenter.com/

The "Surveys" and "Home" link is proper.

<li><a href="#" title="Forum" onClick="MM_openBrWindow('http://www.poiscenter.com/forums/index.php','POISForum','scrollbars=yes,toolbar=1,width=1000,height=800')">Forum[/url]</li>

Just remove the onClick=... part and change the href to /forums/index.php

I think that's a good suggestion, berlin1984. Making websites easy for search engines to read can only improve the visibility of poiscenter.com

However, Daveman may have used the Javascript link to help to stop spambots - I don't know if spam is still a big problem on this forum?

hurray, Quantum did a phenomenal job in finally curtailing spam.

Thanks, guys, for your good words :)

When I first arrived here, there were 14 000 members on the forum list, and only 600 were legit...  New spammers accounts were created by the dozen every day.  This is over for a few years now, registration process is under control, and we have over 900 legit members, currently.

However, in order to implement the change proposed by Berlin, above, you will have to talk to Daveman - I have no access to the poiscenter.com domain itself, only to the forum software, SMF, programming.  this change looks rather easy to do, it's up to Daveman ( unless the host services would agree to do it... )

Honestly, I am very glad to help with the forum management, moderation and programming, but taking the poiscenter.com domain and site in charge is not something I have the time and desire to do.

Berlin's change is a good idea, and it could help improve poiscenter.com's visibility on Google. But it's not essential that we make the change.

If Daveman has some free time in the future, perhaps we could all share our ideas about how we could improve poiscenter.com's status on Google. If you search for "POIS", poiscenter.com doesn't appear on the first 10 pages of Google's search results.

Thanks for the suggestion, Berlin.  I could do that, if I get access to the poiscenter.com domain programming.   If I do get there, I will try this.  If I have some difficulties or it does not work as intended, I will ask for your help, as you seem to know at least a bit about web programming and HTML.

Sorry to nag, but could you try to improve the situation? :-)

If I google for (in new private tab):
pois orgasm forum
We're not even on page 1.
We will lose people to using reddit.

I'm very keen on getting new members, also for things like increasing forum poll votes. (Are we spring Children?)

Googling "pois forum", we are the first search result  :)

Have a look at this link to Google Trends, which allows you to compare the popularity of different search terms:

https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today%205-y&q=pois%20forum,pois%20center,pois%20orgasm%20forum

You can see that Google says "Hmm, your search doesn't have enough data to show here." for "pois orgasm forum", so perhaps it is not such a popular search? Of course, there are still some steps we could take to make the forum more visible  :)
