Benadryl seems to be the only thing that works for me
« on: April 12, 2016, 09:41:48 AM »
I've tried many other treatments for POIS (Zinc, Niacin, diet, etc) and Benadryl is the only thing that I've found that helps my symptoms.  I take a couple pills the day of (I try to take them later in the day if possible as it makes me incredibly tired), get to sleep early and the next day my symptoms are significantly better.  Have others had success with Benadryl?

I was hooked (personally it became addictive) on Benadryl for years after cardiac surgery.

It was great for getting to sleep.

10 years of significant POIS-reduction, treatment consisting of daily (365 days/year) testosterone patches.

TRT must be checked out carefully with your doctor due to fertility, cardiac and other risks.

Did it have much effect on your POIS symptoms?

Benadryl takes away the histamine effect (at least thats what I think it is) for me. Helping me feel less puffy and more comfortable in general. Goes without saying that the side effect is sleepiness. I tried Sudafed (the new kind) without much success.

I wasn't looking for a POIS effect -  TRT was working. But did it improve my TRT for POIS? I don't know because I never tried to connect the two.

Yes benadryl has helped in the past.  I also found claritin d to be helpful, if you don't mind feeling somewhat wired.  Now I just rely on a super strict diet.  (I probably have gluten intolerance and with that comes a range of sensitivities)
My POIS managed with Diet (@ diet that 100% manages my pois)Believe my POIS stems from inflammation in the gut. O = neuro POIS from inflammation from the gut

supps: microdose zyrtec if needed for food sens. ibuprofen for infl. as needed. Melatonin as needed. Big Pinch Black cumin  seeds once daily

Jake81,
Yes benadryl knocked out my symptoms along with Zyrtec.  I took Zyrtec everyday and Benadryl within 20 seconds immediately following O.  Worked every time.

I find this interesting and let me tell you why I think it works for some of you. I'll share a part of my POIS theory:

POIS can be explained through migraines, there is a lot of migraine types, some of them doesn't cause pain and have a very wide symptomatic variety. Possible cause (topic related only):

Vasodilation after release: Vasodilation in POIS ocurrs (IMO) due to an excessive glutamate relase (glutamate is a vasodilator) and overstimulation of some of AMPA or NMDA receptors (still to be found). POIS is not an allergy, the allergy like symptoms are sometimes present in migraines too. That's why I think POIS has been misunderstood for almost everyone, including doctors and researchers.

Quote
NOSE: Unexplained nasal congestion and a runny nose (autonomic nasal dysfunction)

BRAIN: Mood and sleep disorders

"Brain fog" reduces cognitive function - short term memory loss, inability to recall words or to multi-task

Temperature regulation

Difficulty in understanding what people are saying, despite having a normal hearing test (central auditoy processing disorder)

Benadryl relief your symptoms by being a vasoconstrictor, not precisely because it counteracts the histamine reaction.

If we can give POIS a scientific aproach, and stop chasing pseudoscientific and nonsense ideas, we will be in the right way to explain it and maybe fix it. Would love to see what you think about what I've said.

You are very brillant, Scrub. Your post is simply excellent.
I have a "flu" since 9-10 days.
To catch a cold, for me, is like to have an overreaction to cold. or to be hypersensitive. Like Pois.
I will think about it.

On the internet, I see some people are taking taurine for their migraine.

I had nightmares from - I THINK - Benadryl (but not 100% sure it was that) this week, so I stopped taking it as a sleep aid.

Anyone else experience that?

I also suspect that POIS might be connected either to migraine, or to a pre-existing chronic inflammation (e.g. eyes, ears, sinuses).

I had migraines as a child (the halo kind), which appeared around the time of developing sexuality (age 11-12). These migraines disappeared, but now I have POIS. Also, sexual activity causes earpain, and I feel there might be a chronic inflammation that's causing trouble.

Anyone else with earpain as part of POIS?

Male, INTJ. POIS symptoms: red eyes, ear-pain, anxiety, speech problems, pale/ugly skin, stiff neck, double chin, tinnitus, light sensitivity. POIS even after stimulation without O.

Hmmmm, I have urethral inflammation like 24/7 and I always connected it to POIS, but what if it wasn't; what if it was the opposite?

100% agree, but non of us is really a medical scientists, we're just normal people who are lucky to have the internet and decent English language.

Long term, I’ve been told it causes short-term memory loss.

I’ve taken way too much for too long! I stopped this week, but hope I’m ok.

@Nas Perhaps it's an idea to try to suppress the inflammation with drugs, and see if it helps POIS? I'm thinking stronger drugs like antibiotics or corticosteroids, of course to be discussed with a doctor.

I'm the only POIS patient I know who has been cured 100% and that's since last February of this year.  Took Benadryl immediately following at least a thousand Os along with Zyrtec every day.  After 5 years of that treatment my system had hypo desensitized itself to the POIS reaction.  My doctor said it was an allergy or the antihistamines wouldn't have worked.

The difference between Zyrtec and other anti-allergic med is that Zyrtec doesn't have  atropinic effect (=anti-cholinergic). Is it the secret of desensitization ?
