Day 6 of abstinence
« on: March 21, 2013, 01:17:54 PM »
After finding this forum over the weekend, I decided to test my POIS by abstaining from O for a week.  My goal is to see if my symptoms resolve and then have an O and see if they return.  I am guessing that this will be the longest I have gone since puberty, over 30 years.

I am on day six and I have some observations:
-Physical energy is through the roof.  My 30 minute walk last night (which is usually a struggle) turned into an hour.  And I could of kept going.
-Typical aches and pains are minimal
-Sleeping much better
-Still feeling mentally foggy, maybe a little improvement
-Overall mood has improved
-Sex drive is in overdrive.  I got on an elevator with a few women I work with and had to hide my erection with my laptop like a 13 year old boy.  They smelled so good!  I could almost taste them.  HR frowns on licking co-workers.   Abstaining is going to be difficult.

Questions:
-How long does it usually take for the mental symptoms to clear?
-Is abstaining for a week long enough?  Or should I go longer to get a better picture of what normal is like?

It depends..For me 2-3 weeks if i abstain for full recover..I think you will understand when your symptoms will diminish as you get better everyday..But notice that everyday will be harder and harder to abstain and also you wiil probably start to have nocturnal emissions (wet dreams) after 1,5 - 2 weeks which will may give you some POIS..So even abstaining is not a choice my friend..We are like in a doomed situation..You should better find a temporary treatment like other members such as niacin - fenugeek etc..(For me the longest period is 2 months just to say)

Same here. Two months. Many decades!
10 years of significant POIS-reduction, treatment consisting of daily (365 days/year) testosterone patches.

TRT must be checked out carefully with your doctor due to fertility, cardiac and other risks.

40+ years of severe 4-days-POIS, married, raised a family, started/ran a business

The brain's dopamine receptors ─ the pleasure-reward system─ is activated during sex,(also in drugs, alcohol, or gambling). In our case we get f up quickly slide down into despair after the sex act, but dopamine receptors are left "hungry" for more sex.
I wonder if a Dopamine antagonist would be any good, they are supposed to reduce libido and such. I sure hope that research goes somewhere before I end up stealing and begging on the streets to buy Niacin and testosterone to get my fix of O.

Thanks for the replies, guys.  I know abstinence isn't a longterm solution.  Even if I could do it (which I have no desire to), I have my wife's needs to consider.

My goal with this test is to prove that POIS is the cause / trigger for my symptoms.  I have had so many disappointments over the past two decades, so many false diagnoses and  treatments,  that I need to prove that POIS is real for me.  That alone will be is a huge step forward.

After my abstinence test, I plan to go to an endocrinologist and get a full work up and try the Niacin treatment.

I suggest the work up, then try the abstinence with niacin.  I am in my second week with no O, and it is tough. I think I am wetting myself a little at night, and my left testicle is really hurting. So much so I had to stay home from work and wear loose  sweat pants. I am pleasantly surprised how the niacin sharpens my mind, and takes the bite out of the headache.  Guys, please work harder at cutting back the O's.  This may be your only option.

I know it's sooo difficult to abstain from orgasms longer than a few days. But this is the only thing that really helps me reduce my symptoms. I really, really want to try abstaining for months instead of just a couple weeks (which helps, but not completely) to see what happens. I remember reading a few posts somewhere that said it took more than 2 months to really start feeling better. Until the cure, this is the only way and it's something I am going to keep trying. I have gotten far (longest is about 2 weeks), but it's not enough. :-\

Prancer, have you considered that you will probably have nocturnal emissions after 1 or 2 weeks of abstinence which will also cause you POIS symptoms..You cant just stop orgasm and even if you do you will still ejaculate but this time in your sleep..Also you will become very sensitive in this area and you might start have leakings everytime you have a sexual experience like watching a nude picture or video or even when you are close to a girl which attracts you..Thats what happened to me when i was abstaining, and i managed to abstain a lot but i started having this problems and i couldnt continue..Anyway, if this situations like nocturnal emissions or leakings doesnt come up to you, then go ahead and abstain but i doubt..

As for me, the longest I can abstain is one month. After which nocturnal emission happens and I go back to the never-ending loop of discomfort.
It started ever since my first orgasm. It lasts exactly for 7 days. Symptoms mainly in the brain: extreme mental  fatigue, difficulty concentrating, inability to comprehend/retain what is read,shortened attention span, loss of speech fluency, cloudy mindedness, mild headache, and anxiousness

Hi Chris, NE's aren't a huge problem for me (I don't get them too often). Of course, if I do have one, I will still get POIS symptoms and will have to start over again. Also, if I do get a NE, I will at least get to experience some lessening of my symptoms up until the NE. About any semen leaking, orgasm is what gives me the worst symptoms. Thank you for the warning though.

It takes at least 3 days for me to start feeling somewhat normal again. It'll be a week before I'm able to function comfortably. I never fully recover - the most is about 70% recovery at the very maximum.
