Long term effects of Niacin intake
« on: April 24, 2012, 06:21:09 PM »
I have decided to open this thread to know more about the long term effects of Niacin intake.

Since some of us are taking it on a continuous basis, we should post/link here scientific articles/essays/news about the possible(unwanted) effects of niacin intake during large periods of time.

From my own experience: I am taking niacin twice a week or every 4 days, 150-200 mg. I take more when i am with my partner(we are not living on the same country), but anyway i couldn´t take it everyday when we meet, because as you know: The flush will dissappear and the effect won´t be the same.

I think we already know that:

1) Extended release version of Niacin (Niacinamide) could cause liver damage if used continuously.
2) Niacin raises HDL("Good" Cholesterol), Lowers LDL ("Bad" Cholesterol)
3) It´s water-soluble. It´s excreted in the orine.
4) Far higher dosages (more than 2000 mg) are used to treat other disorders unrelated to POIS.
5)... Feel free to continue the list.

I have been talking with a spanish pois sufferer(His nick is Pep, he´s in this forum ;) ) and he told me that he had reasonable success with niacin, and he has asked the brand which sells the niacin what could be the long term effect of taking it.

He told me that the answer was:
1) We should include a B-Multivitamin supplement to avoid imbalances between the group of B-Vitamins.
2) They did not really know what the side-effects could be over a long term niacin intake, but they were not recommending it.

I would want to ask viktor.kons to tell us about his experience with xanthinol nicotinate regarding this issue, and of course nord.nurse advice since she could access this information easier than most of us.

Of course, i think we should make blood tests periodically to check our liver function.

Any concern/doubt will be very welcomed!

as pois sufferers we take very low doses of niacin ,taking niacin once twice a week to avoid pois isnt a big deal , as people take doses of niacin up to 1500 mg on daily basis

I've heard a couple of reports that niacin has caused skin problems. One case was after a rather heavy dose.

At one point I saw that I was having a small rash that I hadn't had before, but that doesn't happen now. It might have been something else, or a short term reaction and I'm accustomed now... who knows.

WITHOUT RESEARCH THERE WILL BE NO CURE!
Sessions 5 to 9 days, mostly Flu-like, joints, digestion problems, light cognitive.
Niacin has changed my lif though, now 1 day MAX.
Somewhere in this interaction with Niacin is the answer!

He empezado a tomar Niacina, y solo la he tomado tres veces.
