How are you guys treating lingering Brainfog?
« on: April 10, 2012, 04:47:49 PM »
I mean the lingering lack of clarity (especially when forced to think on my feet) that I have even 4 days post-O. (For those of you that don't experience this: I continue to have a somewhat poor memory post-O and never feel as sharp as it seems like I should. This isn't to say that the POIS treatments i've undertaken haven't helped my brainfog -- they've been hugely helpful! But I still get a slight fuzziness and slight pressure in the spot in between my eyes.)

Have any of you found an especially dynamite solution? Has anyone tried taking an anti-inflammatory? I tried taking an NSAID in combination with Niacin to make this lingering fog go away, and seemed to (maybe?) be having a little success but had to stop because it gave me asthma. Anyone tried NSAIDs? Or anything else?
POIS since I was about 15. 1.75 years of desens and I'm now about 80% POIS free. Still working through best practices for maintaining my immunity and administering my injections with my doctor. Email me if you have tips or questions!

Maybe niacin helps.

I remember something.
After a huge pain (about 15-30 minutes later), I often feel this dream-like state. I'm convinced it's the same neurotransmitter.

Tried NSAIDS, doesn't help.  Only a well-executed niacin flush can prevent any symptoms for me.  I would also recommend NOT taking NSAIDS more than 2x a MONTH.  There have been studies released recently my father (a cardiologist) informed me about.  NSAIDS are prescribed by some to prevent heart attacks, but it has been found that more than 2x NSAIDs a month will be enough to damage your cardiovascular system.  They are bad for your overall health!
Turmeric and Rosemary 30-45 minutes before orgasm for anti-inflammatory and immune support has helped me a lot. Faster and easier than niacin approach.

i too suffer from a lingering brainfog that i feel has gone worse over the years , i think my brainfog has developed a certain threshold that i dont recover from ,i feel it could be psychological due to lack of self confidence in your mental abilities due to previous pois , maybe if i keep taking niacin before orgasm will help raise that certain threshold

Nightengale,

Have you tried NSAIDs in combination with Niacin? I seemed to be having some success when I would take Niacin pre-O and would take the anti-inflammatory (Indomethcin, i believe) at night. But again, I only did so for a few days. So there's a chance that the benefits I experienced were all placebo effect.

Any, yes, NSAIDs are generally bad for you -- especially your cardiovascular system and liver. Although whether they're as bad for one's general sense of well-being as POIS is up for debate...

I found that if for some reason, my flush wasn't as strong as it should be (or too impatient to wait for the flush to pass) that the POIS is not completely blocked. Usually what "comes through" are joint pains and neck pains. So the NSAIDs work great to get rid of those. The other POIS symptoms that NSAIDs don't touch are usually take care of by the niacin, even if the (niacin) dose was a little low.

WITHOUT RESEARCH THERE WILL BE NO CURE!
Sessions 5 to 9 days, mostly Flu-like, joints, digestion problems, light cognitive.
Niacin has changed my lif though, now 1 day MAX.
Somewhere in this interaction with Niacin is the answer!

Interesting. I've found essentially the same thing (bigger flush; less symptoms) but have also had some success with niacinimide. It's hard to know what to make out of all the conflicting evidence.

In any case, I finally saw an allergist today and spoke to him about my symptoms. He prescribed an anti-inflammatory for me to use in combination with niacin. If I get any especially positive results I'll post them here.

(Btw, the allergist was HUGELY sympathetic and seemed to believe me wholeheartedly. If i'm able to start a desens with him, i'll definitely add him to our list of collaborators.)

I don't think it's conflicting.

The flush with niacin is more of an indicator that the system is "saturated" with niacin, and therefor that you have taken a minimum dose to have effect. But it ISN'T what actually prevents the POIS symptoms.

Niacinimide on the other hand provides that ingredients that you need, but there is not "indication" of that saturation point.

BTW can you give a simple account of the dose and method that has worked for you with niacinimide, I'd like to give it a try.
It's easier to get here.

Well, it does seem to conflict with what allergy-oriented theorists have suggested. Every medical professional (including my allergist) that I've heard talk about niacin in relation to POIS seems to believe that it works because it's causing the depletion of histamine stores. The flush is what causes this depletion. Unless niacinimide also causes such a depletion by some other means (which is entirely possible), it's effectiveness indicates that those individuals are at least partially wrong.

In any case, niacinimide doesn't work as well for POIS prevention as niacin. In fact, I wouldn't even recommend using it unless you're already under POIS and need immediate relief. But when I have used it for prevention, I've taken 400mg around an hour before hand. It does seem to diminish the symptoms somewhat. And it seems to do so even when one isn't on an empty stomach. Still, it doesn't even come close to niacin.

If using it for relief, I'd say: 1) don't use it before Day 2; and 2) try taking 300-400mg a day. It helps me a little when i'm fully under.

I wonder how effective "smart drugs" (nootropics) are?

Like piracetam.

Ritalin and caffeine help my brain fog, but now I'm dealing with nausea side effects, so I'm cutting back.

Someone at the other forum mentioned sulbutiamine as a caffeine substitute without the side effects.
