vitamin D, magnesium, depletion
« on: December 07, 2018, 06:44:23 AM »
Don't really know wether to put this in the autoimmune or hormonal subforum

Started supplementing 3000iu vitamin D3 about a week ago. Haven't had my levels checked but I'm sure that I'm deficient because of where I live and what I do. Vit D is something most people seem to lack, because you see it talked about everywhere especially around winter time, and its supposed to be important for especially immune function.

However, after an O rather than improve that my symptoms got worse and have taken longer to go away. I've thought about this before when considering trying other supplements that there's always a delicate interplay and a fine balance of other micronutrients that have to be considered. I didn't in the case of vitamin D, which is not to say that I didn't need it, but rather that what supplementing it depletes might be a key in remedying POIS.

From what I can gather it's mainly magnesium but also vitaminK and vitamin A. These in turn have their own effects on other substances, like magnesium on zinc. I've seen magnesium pop up on the forum but not quite sure what the consensus is, and if there is one, if people have considered looking at the relationship with other nutrients. I'm not an expert but I generally think that it's better to aim for balance than just taking benefits of individual supplements at face value. Something's amiss and it'd be nice if the missing piece was the same for most of us but megadosing one or a couple of things (in the case of vit D many go way higher and what I took is already a couple of times the RDI which varies between countries) is in my opinion unlikely to work.

So you took vitamin D and it made your POIS worse?

I started my winter vitamin D cure :)

I will try transdermal magnesium. There is a pilot study showing increased cell magnesium after magnesium cure.

The other thing I will to try is silicon. It seems important to fix magnesium.

And to finish, I will try an old thing : bone soup :)
It seems to be effective for minerals income.

About magnesium :

1/ It's a natural anti-histamine. Mast cells activate granulation of histamine by calcium entries.
Magnesium is a calcium antagonist and then it works like a natural anti-histamine according MD JP Curtay.

2/ Several forms of stress (oxydative, thermical) are modulated by magnesium via noradrenaline.

How's the transdermal going? Do you feel any benefit?

I have some too but I tend to forget to use it because taking magnesium orally seems to give me acute results that I can actually feel. Especially Magnesium Threonate. I believe Vitamin D and Magnesium levels are deficient in almost every Westerner so we should all be supplementing those two.

Hi drop247,

I live relatively up north ( 48 deg North), not much sun here, especially during our long winter, and taking 2000ui Vit D3 daily for some years have been very beneficial overall for my health  ( for example, I have less colds during winter).

Magnesium had been the first thing I have ever found, 30 years ago, that would help a little with my POIS symptoms. However, I do not supplement daily ) but it is still in my pre-pack), since I am now for many years on a ultra-healthy diet, including daily non-dairy smoothies of organic fruits and veggies, and I also have other great natural sources of magnesium, like organic coco water and shelled hemp seeds.   ( Hemp seeds are also a great source of zinc, phosphorus, thiamine and iron, among other things, and taste great).
