testosterone levels and abstinence
« on: July 07, 2014, 03:11:05 PM »
I was recently reading about how abstinence can effect one's testosterone levels.  According to a couple of studies, testosterone levels in men tend to spike after 7 days of refraining from ejaculation. Now, if someone already has low testosterone levels, perhaps abstaining from ejaculation for 7 days elevates their testosterone levels enough to bring them back to normal.  That may explain why many people have POIS periods lasting for roughly a week.

I also must add, that hot flashes are a symptom of a sharp decrease in testosterone levels.  I personally have experienced feelings of excessive warmth that could be hot flashes after orgasm.  I have also seen quite a few other people complaining about having hot flashes after orgasm. Now, once a person ejaculates after 7 days, their testosterone levels may sharply drop back to their original low levels, causing the symptoms of POIS.

Interesting. TRT has cured my POIS 80-90%

Wonder if there is a relation to vagus nerve?...
10 years of significant POIS-reduction, treatment consisting of daily (365 days/year) testosterone patches.

TRT must be checked out carefully with your doctor due to fertility, cardiac and other risks.

40+ years of severe 4-days-POIS, married, raised a family, started/ran a business

What does testosterone have to do with the Vagus?

I like this point.

If you ask this question, I guess two things : you must have hopeful elements about vagus nerve study but they can't make the link with hormones therapy.

Ejaculation might create a fluctuation of testosterone, causing itself a fluctuation of dopamine regulating the vagus nerve.

I'm sure there is some connection between testosterone and pois, at least for me.  And I have a tendency to believe it may apply to all of us since our recovery time is in sync with testosterone productions post-O.

Thoughts?

Clueless.

That's why I asked. :)

I believe that the Vagus nerve serves as a communication route between ones reproductive organs and the brain.  When you ejaculate, your brain needs to somehow know so it can begin the post orgasmic refractory period. For example, prolactin, is secreted after orgasm by the pituitary gland.  The pituitary gland receives a signal from the hypothalamus to secrete prolactin. Somehow, a signal needs to be relayed to the hypothalamus from the reproductive organs.  My guess is that the signal travels through the Vagus nerve.  So, if the brain is receiving a faulty signal from the vagus nerve, a whole lot of issues may arise.  Perhaps prolactin may be released in excess.  If prolactin is too high, testosterone levels will drop.

That’s maybe the reason why most of us can’t have 2 O.’s in 1 week. The messed up immune system can take 1 hit in 7 days. But not 2. A lot of us, even the ones who find relief from vitamins or something else, can’t have sex twice a week without heavy symptoms.
POIS since 2000. Very bad since 2008. I knew that I have POIS since June 2010. Desensitization since March 2011. I stopped with desens in July 2016. I have 50% less POIS. And only 1 day of POIS. Purified CBD works for me, but I am allergic for CBD.

I think raising testosterone can help some with some symptoms, but isn't a cure for me. There are other things that can help raise testosterone that don't have much effect on POIS and can actually make it worse for some (intense exercise, a good nights sleep, both make POIS worse, being sleep deprived actually helps symptoms for me which reduces test levels).

If low testosterone is what causes it, I wonder why testosterone is low in the first place. Doesn't seem like a root cause.

I'm very sure the answer for me lies in the microbiome, I think there's some pathogenic bacteria that is hard to get rid of and has damaged the gut lining causing foreign undigested food particles/proteins entering the blood stream, not sure how it directly leads to POIS. Alot/most of the treatments and cures seem to be related to the gut (antibiotics, antifungals, diet etc) and/or treating an inflammatory response (curcumin, anti-histamines, niacin, etc).
