Trying to do School is hellish
« on: March 10, 2014, 07:24:52 AM »
Almost at final weeks, I'm sneezing like hell, my body aches and my mind and sinuses are stuffy.   I also feel like I want to break down and cry from the stress.  :-[

Get a ton of sleep & exercise, and try to avoid orgasm until the stress has gone away. Good luck! :]

Keep reminding yourself that your illness is likely temporary, and once you're cured you will be back at full force again!

10 years of significant POIS-reduction, treatment consisting of daily (365 days/year) testosterone patches.

TRT must be checked out carefully with your doctor due to fertility, cardiac and other risks.

40+ years of severe 4-days-POIS, married, raised a family, started/ran a business

Thanks for the encouragement.   I O'd again today while I was still in the middle of a bad POIS period.  IT sucks, because I can't help it.  I think I have chronic pelvic pain syndrome which may or may not be a by product of POIS, and so it makes my prostate act up which in turn makes me want to O to relive the stress, even though I *know* it makes it worse.   The sinuses are the absolute worst.  Anti-histamines work to a degree but I'm tight on cash for the time being.  God this sucks.   I've been dealing with this crap since I hit puberty and I'm 22.   I just hate not being able to do the most natural thing in the world for a guy.

Dude, I feel ya. I wasn't able to complete college because of POIS and depression. College was my biggest dream as a kid, and I had to let it go. I'm 27, almost 28, and I'm still holding on to the thought that I will have that degree because I want it so bad. The way things work at my school, you can withdraw and not come back for as long as you want, yet you still will have a spot there for whenever you want to come back. I had to ask them three times (the first time I withdrew...) if they weren't joking. I still have 6 semesters :)
Turmeric and Rosemary 30-45 minutes before orgasm for anti-inflammatory and immune support has helped me a lot. Faster and easier than niacin approach.

Man, college was hell... with all that anxiety and brain fog, 80% of the college life was hiding in my dorm room. I could barely wake up to go to morning class... I skipped 70% of my classes! I surprisingly still got my degree, but I eventually didn't even use it because I could remember anything I learned, or I didn't apply myself.

Fuck POIS.

In addition to skipping class i used to be late all the time, this resulted in me getting a d in one class where the teacher stops taking assignments couple of minutes after class starts.
I was able to do the math and sciences courses when i eventually win my fight with lack of motivation  and found a way to concentrate. The english classes and essay classes, i dont know i had passed those, i believe those classes show the true effect of pois on the brain.

i was stupid enough to orgasm during alot of my final weeks in college. I will say dont stop studying and thinking you will wait till you recover, try to get as much studying done as possible even in pois. It might be harder to study in pois but you are still retaining a good amount of information.

Fuck POIS.

You precisely summarize 90% of the feeling that we POISers have...for Fucking POIS!

And I'm not crazy about using F-language, but sometimes POIS just drives us all up a Special Wall that has a Special Name!!! >:(

Hello you younger POISers,

You are going to be helped in the next months and years, in a way us older lemon POISers unfortunately weren't.

If I can help your thought process around education at all, in parallel with some of the excellent advice given by the guys on this post already, it is this. Please know that learning beyond 2nd level schools, high schools and 3rd level colleges is changing.

What do I mean? I failed every exam from teenage years, after onset of POIS, until in the last 10 years, when adult 3rd level learning started becoming available, not just via examinations, but more about projects, assignments, practical theses, ongoing assessment and validated studies to be submitted etc.

I got honors in everything always until circa 13/14 yrs old. I then went on to get a NO GRADE In pass Mathematics at 18. I believed I was a total failure, as I didn't know what was wrong with me. I couldn't study or cognitively understand complex subjects or remember things for examinations, my motivation went, and mainly because of POIS symptoms & fallout.

Two years back, I gained honors in a masters, 1 level below doctorate, in my chosen area, from the best and toughest university in my country. This is because it was based on assignments and being able to work through things over a period of time - tough assignments, but I didn't have to remember for an exam 2 hours, which I can't. I am passionate about music, but can't remember song's lyrics.

I am NOT blowing my own trumpet here, as I think academic learning is way overvalued as against more applicable learning like "people skills". I just want you to realize, even though POIS is f*ing awful, you can still focus on finding subjects to learn, that will hold your motivation in spite of your symptoms, you can find opportunities to learn and develop and do well. We will together get to the source of the illness and cure it / or seriously reduce its impacts.

As others have said, we can't let it define who we are or limit us totally.

No intention to deny anyone's belief or thinking here, but if we are so focused on our symptoms that we have time to try 25 different cures at one time or measure the length of an ejaculation (a perhaps highly valid post elsewhere and absolutely no disrespect meant), but maybe we need to realize we are trying too many things at once, or else letting this syndrome control us our minds too much. There may well be a connection between the aforementioned length and what's going on during POIS, but we have to get on with our lives, which includes finding ways to perceive and use school/college in a way that works for us and where it is not seen as "hellish". Know it is tough, but we need to develop our own strategies to do the best for ourselves.

Yes, I like many here, have learned to say F**k it, but now "what will help me to feel better tomorrow", and then do that - a run or whatever.

Believe me, I have been there with your teenage pain and 20's pain and feeling very down about it all, and in hindsight, I would not have let it control me the way it used to. MIND OVER MATTER !

Well, this is supposed to be the last week of the last semester of my Masters, except for a cumulative exam I put off for next semester. I have three final papers to turn in no later than wednesday (two days from now), 15 pages each and I'm only half way through one of them. I do not think I will be passing my classes this semester. If I wasn't symptomatic right now I'd probably be very upset, but I'm in full pois mode so I don't give a shit about much of anything.
I have both physical and psychological symptoms for about 6 days. Muscle soreness, pain in the prostate and warmth in the pelvic area, fatigue, lack of motivation, irritability, confusion, inability to focus, forgetting obligations, difficulty communicating, difficulty interacting with others.

I hated school too.

Looking back now, I'd say you have to have militant discipline--discipline to resist the O and go after the education you want at all costs.

But damn that is hard with all those fine ladies and their skimpy clothing...sometimes women are a curse!  But I love them anyways.

Hi,

is anyone here studying pure Math? I seem to have a lot of trouble studying for my exams. My exams are really tough. I usually have only 2 per semester: the midterm, worth 40% (4 questions) and the final, worth 60% (6 questions). The room for error is therefore very slim and i go through hell when I have to deal with my symptoms at exam time. My marks are often near average or lower. I find it awful that these symptoms are very cognitive since I was initially hoping to be able to do research someday but the chances for that seem to disappear as I advanced through my degree. I am often wondering if it actually makes sense to study something so mentally challenging when I'm often unable to think clearly. It's the worst feeling for me when I'm faced with a question on an exam and have no idea how to even write something that may help in the proof... (what's as bad is when I finally see the mark I got... it's so harsh to put in so much time and effort and getting hardly anything back) I was wondering if there is someone who has gone through a math degree with POIS, and what are tricks you may have to avoid with feeling utterly confused and stressed as well as cope with symptoms during an exam.. (P.S. I am also doing Computer Science and I have much less trouble with that. It's really Math that takes such an immense piece of my life out of me. Also, during the past 3 years I haven't found the time and energy/confidence to get involved in a relationship. I'm hoping things will change once I'm done with school...)

Thanks
Symptoms since I'm 15 y o, hair loss, muscle twitches, brain fog, anxiety, low confidence, stuffy nose, itchy eyes and skin, sensitive to temperature change, loud heartbeat. I currently use 5-htp and SAM-e.

If you have a documented mental illness, your college may allow you to have extra time on exams. There is likely a program that provides assistance to people with disabilities. It will be worthwhile to set up an appointment and talk with them.

Yes I guess I should have tried that sooner.. I didn't have the courage to go and see someone at school to arrange that. I am supposed to finish this semester so I guess it may be too late for it. It's my hardest semester yet so I do hope I will at least pass all my courses

The problem with asking for more time on exams is that you don't want other people to know why you are given extra time.  You don't want to be the odd one out and hear another student saying "hey, why does he get extra time," and then it's not too long before everybody knows you have a mental illness.

What I did once, because my professor asked me if I was sick because I looked sick and because I was missing classes was that I told him that I have a version of MS, in private after class, and it's very hard for me to concentrate and even get up in the morning.  That worked out well for me and he understood.  You can't simply tell the professor, "look professor... I have post orgasmic illness syndrome," lol, I mean you could but that would be very awkward and might be taken as a joke or maybe as, "yeah I have a quick migraine after sex", which is just what POIS isn't, it's more of a chronic condition.

But I would encourage you to continue.  I'm doing accounting and it's not at all easy especially with this condition... I'm really surprised that I am a semester away from graduating.  You would be really proud of yourself in the future if a cure was found and that you somehow managed to get a hard degree under these conditions.
My POIS managed with Diet (@ diet that 100% manages my pois)Believe my POIS stems from inflammation in the gut. O = neuro POIS from inflammation from the gut

supps: microdose zyrtec if needed for food sens. ibuprofen for infl. as needed. Melatonin as needed. Big Pinch Black cumin  seeds once daily

I did not do pure math , i did engineering so did the baby math. I had friends that did pure math so i am guessing you are probably taking advanced calculus or something similar since it is your last semester and you are doing proofs.  I always had the thought those classes will be quite difficult for a poiser, the thought process required is not as straight forward as other lower level math classes. Dont beat yourself down though, does classes are very challenging for non poisers to. I dont know what the scores are like for your classmates but when my friend took it a lot of the people in his class including him were not scoring well.  And computer science has a lot of opportunities for research, you can always do research in that.

My best advice is study as much as possible before the test, and put in extra effort in your studying during days you are 100%.   Time your recovery for the days you take your test, so you are 100% percent when taking test.
