Sameer, I'm testing something since 1 week : pumpkin seeds. The next weeks I will tell you if it helps my anxiety. Anyway with these seeds I sleep like a baby !
30-80g of seeds at 4PM with 1 biscuit and chocolate (a little sugar to increase tryptophan in blood via insulin).
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18066139
Quote
Protein-source tryptophan combined with a high glycemic carbohydrate is a potential anxiolytic to those suffering from social phobia.
30g of seeds = 50% or tryptophan for a day

A bit expansive :s  If it helps me, next year i will do this :

Am going to try and support you here in a small way, but the real answers that you may need in your life now, I may not have, as you battle with your POIS, diabetes and anything else that is present.

You say that you are going through a tough time and want to sleep better.  You seem to be experiencing extreme anxiety and depression, for which you are / have been taking medications prescribed by doctors.

I think you had said before it is badly affecting your life with your children too. I can relate to this on some level, not having the energy or inner happiness to be the Dad you want to be all the time. You aren't alone.  You also have these diabetes issues, so you need to take real care.

Firstly may I emphasise, please NEVER just come off medications, particularly those for depression. You probably know this already, as you are an experienced guy. Also, try not to mix too many different drugs or supposed complementary together at the same time.  It is a shock to hear of some of the concoctions I have seen folks on other forum mentioning. I don't know how this can be monitored in a healthy manner through online support.

Let me suggest a couple of small things that you might throw in to your consideration, as a strategy to help you sleep and feel better emotionally, the main being a mental/physical approach to stress reduction.

Anxiety attacks!
As you probably know, one of the main reasons for anxiety is what is termed the "Stress Response". Especially in POIS. I actually studied this on a course a decade back (general anxiety and stress) through Harvard Mind Body Medical Institute (now the Benson Henry Institute at Massachussetts General Hospital in USA ). To address and reverse this stress response and have our mind in a place where sleep is more likely, we need a "Relaxation Response" to encourage a degree of mental calm. In medical parlance, this is basically a reversal of adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol in the blood stream, if I remember correctly.  Stops the fight/flight type normal human reaction to a stressor (such as in bad POIS). Won't clear everything, but can help a bit.

While all of this you may feel wouldn't apply with your situation, it may more than you realise, however, the relaxation response needs to be practiced regularly (even ten minutes morning and night time each day) to help you sleep. After a while, it might not need twice per day. Please note I am talking symptom reducing and better feelings here, and not a cure for anything.

An online credible medical resource I am providing here for your potential review. You can visit here for more information on (see links for Stress, Relaxation Response, Physical Activity, Nutrition, & Managing Stress) Link is http://www.massgeneral.org/bhi/basics/

Relaxation / Meditation CD's on iTunes http://www.massgeneral.org/bhi/store/default.aspx

There are also, as you know, many relaxation CD's and tons of stuff on you tube for calming the mind a bit.  You need one or two you really personally like.

Counseling?
Also, as a question for you. Would some counselling (1-1) help you at this time, to deal with your depression and anxiety? It might help you to talk to someone periodically to help get the frustration out. Do you have this locally? Only a thought. You are unique, so what works and helps me, may be very different for you.

A Physical Approach.

As well as general doctors, maybe someone in the holistic and wellness field can help you deal with things. It helps me, when I need extra support. Something even simple like reflexology treatment or other calming methods.

Can exercise also help you?  I think I asked you this before. Exercise that you would enjoy, if done regularly, may help you a little   to keep your mind off the bad feelings you experience. Exercise that I like? (For me, as an older guy, like you, is  riding a bike on the open road, not a bike in a gym). I can do it well, and enjoy more of course, when out of my worst POIS state. In POIS, I don't feel much like it, but it helps with my mental state and with sleep.

Hope something here helps.

Please take good care in going TOO heavy down the prescription route.  If you taking Seroxat, please also liaise with your Doctor, on trying anything new. There is a balance and you need good professional advice. Best to you.

Good news that you aren't having to resort to a lot of medication right now.

Just so you know, I am not a qualified medical person, so need to be careful on strongly advising anything (in case it works poorly for someone else like you). I am experimenting also in the world of POIS supports.

I don't actually know much about Xanax or how it may interfere with a relaxation method, but I think it is supposed to be complementary.  I am hoping that some of the information I have provided is of some assistance to you.

What I was trying to offer you, as one potential solution to the "Xanax" solutions for sleep was this holistic way of teaching your system, mind, body and soul to feel a bit less stressed.
There are many other methods for achieving this "quieter mental state" like light Yoga, Meditation etc etc. The easy to learn one I have mentioned, The "Relaxation Response" just happens to come from a credible medical source origin "Harvard" & now "Massachusetts general hospital, USA".

For anti-anxiety, the best advice I can offer anyone (just my opinion, not fact) is to start to practice relaxing, 10 mins am, and 10 mins late pm. Build it into a habit, so that your system can slow down your thoughts, your metabolism, and hence your mind, so you can feel more like sleeping.

The enjoyable exercise route and possible counselling (with someone you build trust with) could be among the other helpful things. I am not saying that any of this is easy. For example, the relaxation needs the practice and habit building.

But please feel free to email via here, if you have a specific question about it, although the links I posted yesterday explain for you a lot of step by step details. I might be able to suggest other things, if you have tried this. It is really up to persist with the new activities, and see how or if it works for you. Relaxation has always helped me a bit (with symptom reduction), but that is possibly because I personally forced myself to go through the habit of building a practice.  Unfortunately the anxious mind, in my experience, does not always want to do practice, it wants to be in control, but you can do it, if you try. Or ask your Dr if it is a good idea, along with the Xanax.

The good Dr, Dr. Benson (who started his research studies around the Relaxation Response and basic meditation many decades back) explains in this video link http://abcnews.go.com/video/playerIndex?id=7392433

Unfortunately, I am not normally an online or social media person, don't have facebook or any of that. I leave all that to my teenager.

Am happy to respond on the message feature on here, (if you have some follow on questions). POIS forum system  should email me I think. Take care for now Sameer.

  • Physical overshadows cognitive symptoms. 10yrs.
Xanax is a powerful, addictive, anxiety(and pain) reducing drug even at .25mg. Nobody here will be able to offer you a way to further decrease your anxiety. I know this, because I have experience with a similar drug in the same class. Instead of trying to reduce my anxiety I have thought of ways to get to sleep more easily at night.
Taking ginger tea, no wheat, fenugreek+green tea/garlic, saw palmetto, niacin, boswellia, huperzine, B complex and nutmeg. See my treatment summary post for more info: http://poiscenter.com/forums/index.php?topic=81.msg3513#msg3513

We are much moe prone to panic/anxiety attacks at night. In bed we are semi-conscious, but think we are fully conscious. The imagination and fear combine to form realities that don't really exist. This is not neccesarily a mental illness, just a phenomenon.

Sometimes its better to get up, turn on the lights, watch TV or even go for a short walk outside. It's surprising how the fear can disovle and rather than make it harder to sleep, we find that going back to bed is relaxing and more peaceful. You can often get to sleep more quickly this way.

WITHOUT RESEARCH THERE WILL BE NO CURE!
Sessions 5 to 9 days, mostly Flu-like, joints, digestion problems, light cognitive.
Niacin has changed my lif though, now 1 day MAX.
Somewhere in this interaction with Niacin is the answer!

Meditation helps a lot. Youtube ASMR videos. Or just close your eyes and listen to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxjWNJU8rNE

Also, walking outside, getting sunlight helps.

In the long run, try not to have sex or masturbate. I know it's obvious. But I haven't masturbated in 30 days and I feel quite good. Not bad at all. No or barely any anxiety.

Really nice link. Would be a good idea to set up a thread with a whole bunch of these kind of "songs".

Thanks Suppertime.

Sounds good. Nothing like meditation lessons, but I think it could do us all good to have a place where we could go to listen to some calming meditation music.

After your post I went to internet and found https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiwtS-pSSjw super chakra tuning music. We can add that one to the list.
