Which Supplement Do You Recommend Trying First?
« on: May 08, 2014, 08:09:29 PM »
Hey everyone, so I am new here and learning everything I can. I was wondering which supplement do you recommend trying first? I would rather do one at a time to zero in on what really helps, instead of taking a bunch all at once and not knowing what is doing what. I am pretty sensitive to garlic when I have tried taking it raw even in small amount, it gave me really bad stomach issues. I am thinking fenugreek first for about a month, since it seems pretty mild, then bringing in the Niacin. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi mentaldetective!

Raw garlic also irritates my stomach, and I can't stand the taste of raw garlic clove. I would say give the niacin a try first since many POISers are helped by taking niacin. Take a few hundred mg, wait for the flush (itchy feeling) to go away, then go wild! I hope it works for you. It doesn't work perfectly for everyone (me included). Also, niacin is a good temporary fix, but is not a cure.

Good luck mentaldetective and thanks for coming (no pun).

Hi Prancer, I really appreciate your reply and advice! Do you have any particular recommendation as far as brand of Niacin to try? There are so many out there. I was thinking of maybe just going with the one with the best reviews on Amazon. I bought a bottle about 3 years ago that I was going to use for Depression which I learned about from the documentary "Food Matters" but I ended up going out of state and never tried it. It was still sealed, but says best used by last August. I'm wondering if I should I chance it, or just go get a new bottle..... ???

The kind that I use is called Nature's Way (has yellow cap). It's good because it is pure nicotinic acid and works fast, which is what you want instead of the slow release kind. It comes in 100mg capsules. It's probably best to just get a new bottle. I hear from other POISers that fresher is better when it comes to niacin.

Thank you Prancer, I will buy the brand you mentioned and give it a go!

Thank you for the link Colm, I was thinking that I was suppose to take Niacin every day. Good thing you sent me that!

Fenugreek works well for me, but Niacin seemed to swell my stomach.  I stopped attempting to use it in high doses and dropped it completely.

I still use zinc and fish oils.  I found a 'testosterone booster' at Sams club that seems to work quite well.  A multivitamin always helps as well!
