Title: High Prolactin
Post by: poisioq on January 25, 2013, 03:07:24 PM
Hi all,

I am on Cabergoline right now because after a MR a 6mm micro adenoma has been found on my pitutuary gland. I had this test because my prolactin was find a bit too high in my last hormonal tests. Actually my libido is always very low.
They told me that I don't have to worry that it will be reduced just taking these pills.
I have to take 0,25 mg twice a week.
I 'll keep you updated.

I' ve also been found positive in these days to H. Pylori, I had the breath test because I 've been having some stomach issue in the last 2 years, but it looks that the 2 thinks aren't related.
So I took Amoxicilin+Claritomicin+Omeprazol. My doctor prescribed it for a week but after 4 days I had to quit it because my stomach got worse, could not digest anything at all, It has been horrible. After a deep research throught the net I found out that combination often inhibits some enzymes in the stomach that we need for digesting food. Now I am looking for some natural approach

With any luck, fixing your pituitary gland will resolve most of your POIS issues.. Let's hope for you!!

Hi,

Any news ? I still have a pretty high prolactine ; don't know if it could be a cause of POIS or if it just a kind of side effect

Update #1

Hi,
this is my 6th week on Dostinex. I take half a pill twice a week, half on monday and the other half on thursday.
I am experiencing some side effects. Since the first day i am getting very low blod pressure. i usually have low blood pressure, but it is worsening. Another side effect is that it is hard to fall asleep every night. I am also costipated since then , even thought my diet is very reach in fiber. all these side effects are quite common among people on cabergoline
The good thing now is that since a week i have more sex drive but my libido is still low. on the other hand i'm getting kind of porn addicted, I can't stop watching it.

I think you should ask to have your pitutuary gland checked if your prolactin keep staying high. don't be afraid, even if something is found it is commonly benign

Update #2

After 2 months on Cabergoline I had another blood test. Now prolactine is in the range: 13 ng/mL [3.5 - 19.4].
In my last 2 analysis it was 55.9  and 41.5 ng/mL.
My sex drive is still higher than before starting with the therapy, but libido is still slow.
Last week I wanted to  test having an O without taking niacin, but unfortunately I got the same POIS symptoms as ever.
My doctor told me that it takes months in order to be rebalanced.
So I will keep on this regime and will be checked again in 6 months.
Regarding the drug's side effects, almost all of them are gone except for low blood pressure.

Update #3

Still no changes on pois.
furthermore my sex drive is back to the levels before the treatment.
it was the only thing that was improving.
Still my blood pressure is lower than before the treatment, which is quite annoying.
I will have a blood test in 3 months

As far as I recall there have been a few cases of POIS sufferers being diagnosed with a microadenoma on the pituitary. I'm wondering if anyone here that has been scanned for one has been told they DON'T have one. According to wikipedia the prevalence of microadenomas in the general population is around 17%

My prolactin was abnormal: 1,000% higher than average!

After putting me through a brain MRI of my pituitary gland, Docs were clueless so I did my own research: simple look at Wikipedia for "hyperprolactinemia" and I found out why instantly: it's (in my case)  a side effect of Reglan, which I was taking for nausea. Dropped Reglan, prolactin shot downwards to normal!

Prolactin in men is not well understood by doctors, almost nothing taught in medical schools.

Welcome to the frontiers of medicine. :)

Hi.  My doctor's going to scan me for an MSI on my brain, as he talked to a radiologist and a endocrinologist and they all suspect i have one, as my blood results came back with high Prolactin.

I'll hear back on monday to confirm things, then I'll probably take an MSI to see if there is a tumor in my brain that's causing all of this.

My endocrinologist didn't understand high prolactin in MEN. (They didn't teach that in medical schools
a few short years ago. Maybe they still don't).

So -- with my endo's blessing, I went to Wikipedia and found my solution: I looked up "hyperprolactinemia" -- Wikipedia wrote that hyperprolactinemia can be caused by certain medications. So I switched my nausea Rx for one NOT on wikipedia's list...and I was "cured" of high prolactin!

This was done _after_ my endocrinologist's expensive brain MRI (of the pituitary) revealed... nothing! NO TUMOR.

I haven't been on any medications for years though.  I don't know - we'll see.  I'd love for it not to be a tumor, but knowing my luck...

Not just medications. Stress and many other possibilities:

It's worth clicking.

Well, according to my MRI, the results were fairly negative, meaning it doesn't look like I have a tumor.  I have some inflammation around the area, but nothing like  tumor.   I'll be making an appointment with an endocrinologist tomorrow.

Good and bad news at the same time.

Bad: If you had positive results, at least there'd be potential for fixing it.

Good: At least you don't have a tumor.

Interesting about the swelling near the pituitary. First time (I think) we've seen this. Wouldn't it be great if they were on to something,

Update #4

Hi all,
It's 2 months that I'm having 80% less of symptoms.
This improvements started in coincidence with 3 main measures that I'm taking since then. I'm not able to isolate the main factor in this improvement, I cannot say if it's just thanks to cabergoline or to one of those measures or all of the things together.
The fact is that now I am not using anymore niacin, but I still better to have only an O per day and the pleasure is quite low but it is slowly increasing.
Below the measures that are helping:

1. Improved breathing.  I've been inspired in looking into this direction by a thread started by poisperson about UARS. I cannot say if I have sleep apnea or UARS because I ?ve never being tested . But I am quite sure I have a form of nasal resistance.  My left nostril is smaller than the right one. If I plug the right nostril I almost cannot breathe through the left one.  Furthermore my nose always gets obstructed by mucus during the night, so I often wake up. The mucus production is not due to a cold because I have it even when it is very warm like in summer. I'm not even allergic to any common allergens causing rhinitis, I ?ve been tested and resulted negative. It seems to be an asymptomatic rhinitis.
As a consequence of that bad sleeping I wake up every morning very tired and confused.
In order to fix this problem I bought an internal nasal dilator that I put before going to bed and trying to keep clean my nasal conducts during the day using a natural rhinospray made of a saline solution plus the extract of some herbs.
What could be the link beetwen a chronic nasal resistance and a pituitary microadenoma I don't know, but it's quite logical in my opinion the equation: bad sleeping → stressed endocrine system

2. Matrix Method. This has been already debated, I don't want provoke it again. Please refer to the original thread in case you feel to discuss about it.
Let me be clear: it is not the cure for pois.
I don't think pois is emotional nor mental, but in my personal case it's helping in reducing my symptoms.

3. Jelqing. It will sound weird to you,  but I feel I have the obligation to share it.
I'm following the basic routine described in the most famous forum in the net about it. Not because of a matter of size (I think I'm in the average, but I guess you are not interested on it really), but I read it helps with Erectile Disfunction, and actually on that forum many users state they have fixed it thanks to jelqing. Others also say they have fixed some stenosis in theirs urethra.
I don't know if I have ED, but every time I ejaculate,  I need to make an extra effort with the muscles involved in order to cum. I also feel some small resistance in my urethra to the sperm.
I'm noticing that since I'm doing it I have stronger erections.
Please be aware It is a dangerous practice and there is the risk to injury yourself, so I'm not reccomending it!!
I'm sharing this only because I think a possible link between pois and ED should be investigated.
I feel on myself it's doing good things, I'm doing it GENTLY and strictly folowing the instructions of the basic routine without exceeding and with a proper warm up and warm down. But we are not the same, what is good for me could be bad for someone else.
If you begin with this practice you are deciding to do it under your own responsibility being aware of the risks!!

I'm not saying that the above measures are the cure for pois nor reccomending them, not even that pois is only in our mind. I think this illness involves both body and mind aspect. I just needed to share what is working for me.

Anyways, I'm still taking Cabergoline as prescribed by my doctor and I will have a  blood test again in one month.

UPDATE 5#

Since my last update I had 2 blood test. In both of them prolactin resulted into the limits.
But for my last blood test my doctor requested also 2 unusal things: IGF-1 and IgE, that both came up above their normal ranges:

IgE   562,00 UI/mL   (<120,00)
IGF-1   279,80 ng/mL   (96,40 - 227,80)

I also had another MRI, from witch came up that the microadenoma has shrinked from 6mm to 4mm. It took 10 months to get this result, so at this rate I'll need another 20 months in order to get rid of it using Cabergoline.

Regarding my symptoms, unfortunatly I get pois again if I don't use niacin. I don't know why, but that is happening since I stopped Jelqing. I stopped because I got very tired of that daily routine and feel somehow stupid doing it. Anyways on the pegym forum many users state that jelqing is helping with erectile disfunction.
So I thought It could be a good idea to give a try to viagra (I didn't use the Pfizer one but a generic one) , but it didn't relieved my symtoms. Maybe I didn't took enough of it.
First I tried with a 25 mg pill and went up to 50mg.
Anyways, viagra is not affordable for me in the long run.

Just to be clear. I can have normal erections without any "help". But when I was Jelqing my erections were a little stronger. So I'm suspecting that in the past I've never had a truly full erection even if I have never perceived it. I mean, I' ve always had about let say 95% - 98% of a full erection, which looks normal. Maybe that small missing % is causing pois. Just to throw in another further hypothesis.
My feeling is that any time I eyaculate my urethra is not fully hard, so sperm encounter a little resistance when passing throught (I can actually feel that resistance) and it's like it scratches the mucose and gets in touch with blood.

I also can remember that a couple of times in the past I had very strong erections without jelqing: it was when I couldn't eat almost anything because of gastroenteritis.
So: no food for some days (or a very small amount of food) ---> very strong erections ---> pois free.

I don't know what's behind that, pheraps SIBO is also involved.
Thinking about all those hypothesis makes me more confused.
Anyways I hope researchers will help easing my mind.

Hi POISIOQ,
Thanks for your update. I would have thought that the IgE reaction (if it is a reaction to sperm) would mean that you would test positive to a semen allergy skin prick test.
Have you ever had it done?

Hi FB,

thank you for your answer. I 've never had it done.
I am allergic to perfumes used to make soaps. They are everywhere. It's very difficult to find perfume-free products.  Even if I use small quantities for washing my self or for washing my clothes I still get in touch with them.
For my doctor that's the reason why I 'm getting that high igE value.

Anyways, here where I live it would be very difficult to make doctors understand about a semen skin prick test.
But I will take in count also this possibility. I will try to have it done soon, even if I've never been a fan of the semen allergy hypotesis.

Hi guys,

I have some good/bad news.

The good one is that I had an MRI done 2 months ago and it looks that the tumor has disappeared.
Now I 'm progressively decreasing the dose of the drug.

The bad one: as ever , I still get POIS and also I 'm constantly fatigued and in light brain fog state even when absteining for a couple of months. No change in my symptoms.

UPDATE 5#

IgE   562,00 UI/mL   (<120,00)
IGF-1   279,80 ng/mL   (96,40 - 227,80)

From my last blood screening every thing was in range also the hormonal values, except IgE and IGF-1, that came out very close to the above values from my second last blood tests.

Something is wrong with IgE, but I don't believe to the allergy to semen theory.

But my doctor doesn't know how to further investigate it.

I was having higher expectations from being cured from the tumor.

I don't know what to do right now

Hi,

Any progress on the High Prolactin end? I have the basic POIS symptoms after ejaculation. A moment ago I did the mistake of lightly stimulating my libido (no orgasm or ejaculation) and I feel a bit lightheaded (50% of the full version). This comes after 5 weeks of feeling great thanks to abstention.

My Prolactin was found to be high 6 weeks ago; my vitamin d is also depleted (11 ng), but my testosterone was at a very acceptable range.

I have never tried any of the remedies suggested in this website (niacin, Antihistamines, etc.) Could Dopamine agonists help? Anyone it worked for?

Check out your Iron and Ferritin mine were on the lower end and lack of it can decrease Dopamine synthesis so more Prolactin is unopposed by enough Dopamine

That is interesting. I can also feel big difference in erection when I have irritation(interestingly) in my gi tract, which makes things move faster. Ejaculation also has this effect of irritating my GI tract and can help a lot with harder erections. The more ejaculations, the harder erections. Go figure. It certainly seems to have something to do with bacteria and fermentation, maybe SIBO, but not necessarily, I think.

Histamine promotes libido and erection quality and increases Dopamine which is pro-libido/erection

So if you have mast cell activation after ejaculating and gut bacterias producing Histamine increase then you have more Histamine doing that
