Hi guys! First i'd like to apologize for not connecting more often lately. The reason is that i don't wanted to think about Pois so much. But now i have some good news: I'm 90% cured!!! My biggest symptom was the headache i suffered in all my scalp after having an O. That headache lasted for hours and days and also caused me psychological symptoms. So, how i got cured? You wouldn't guess it: i had a total tonsillectomy. I always had what they call "cryptic tonsils" or "tonsils stones". You can check that on Google. It's kind of disgusting. I told my doctor about it and he says "it's not possible for a tonsillectomy to improve headache symptoms". Look, i don't care what he thinks about it LOL (i still think he is a great doctor). What i know is that now after the O. i don't have that debilitating headache anymore!!! I still have some stomach issues, but my main problem was the headache, and that is gone!
So, here are the hypothesis:
1) Tonsillectomy is good for Pois sufferers who have cryptic tonsils/tonsil stones. ---> this one is very likely
2) Tonsillectomy is good for Pois sufferers even if they have no problems with tonsils. (tonsils are lymphoid tissue) ---> this one is not so likely
3) The antibiotics they gave me after the tonsillectomy were the reason for the headaches cure. ---> i don't know.
4) I had an underlying Sleep Apnea and I didn't know, and the tonsillectomy improved that ---> i don't know if i had a sleep apnea, but it's a possibility.
So, i hope you tell me your thoughts about it! :)

Yes I have got those tonsil stones too. POIS triggers the tonsil stones because the troath gets dry. I wanted the remove the tonsils a few years ago but my GP said that if you are older then 25 it's a risky and painfull operation. But I will ask again. Because the tonsil stones causes a lot of bad symptoms. My ears are clogged, my nose, my throat.
If you believe in the auto immune theory: the tonsils have a function in the immune system. So if your tonsils are removed your immune system is less strong. Which is a good thing as regards to POIS.

Vandemolen, i think you are lucky to have tonsil stones in this case, LOL. I mean, if it has worked on me, it is quite likely that it will work on you. I'm older than 25 and i have had no problems with the surgery. About the immune theory...yes, it makes sense that inflammed tonsils are bad for the immune system.
BTW, you should choose a really good doctor and hospital to undergo the tonsillectomy. They have to get rid of the whole tonsils. Not only part of them. Tell them clear that they can't leave any remmant of them.
-
It's a painfull surgery when you are older then 25. I read that you have to stay one night in the hospital because of the bleedings. And then you have to stay a week at home.
But POIS causes tonsil stones, in my case. I thought I had clogged ears and nose because of POIS. But it's because of the tonsil stones, which in my case are caused by POIS.
And I get migraine because of POIS. And migraine causes a headache and concentration problems.

Vandemolen, i can't lie to you...yes, it's painful. Well, more than painful it's annoying, in the sense that during a week it is painful to swallow things for example. But, in my case it paid off...what is a week of suffering compared to having Pois? Yes, the first night you have to stay at the hospital because there is always a bleed possibility, but that would be the worst case, and even then it can be cauterized. But usually there are no problems. You just have to choose a good doctor and hospital. There are tonsillectomy methods better than others also.
BTW, my case was the same as yours! Pois also caused me tonsil stones! I remember after having an O. tonsil stones production was higher. Also, the migraine you say it's similar to the scalp headache i said.
Really, i could be wrong, but your case seems so similar to mine....i wouldn't think it twice, moreover you say that tonsil stones already cause you discomfort...so it's a no brainer! :)

How long ago did you have your tonsils removed, Quasar?

Hi Vincent,
2 and a half months i think :)

Good to hear Quasar. Just for the sake of diligence; what was the name of the antibiotic that you were put on?

Sorry, i don't remember the brand :( But i'll try to find the prescription, or ask the doctor...I think it was the standard antibiotic they always use in all tonsillectomies. I remember the gave me Nolotil (Metamizol) and Paracetamol for pain.

Metamizol has a small risk of causing a severely suppressed immune system. The specific state is known as agranulocytosis, which is when "the concentration of granulocytes (a major class of white blood cells that includes neutrophils, basophils, and eosinophils) drops below 100 cells/mm^3 of blood, which is less than 5% of the normal value." - wikipedia
I wonder if in your case Metamizol just mildly suppressed your immune system and if that might be part of the reason why you're feeling better now.

Well, that would be very very improbable, because agranulocytosis cases are between 2 per 1,000,000 and 1 per 31,000. The only 100% way to be sure is to do a blood test to know my white blood cell count, but i haven't had any symptoms of that at all...
In some countries it is banned, although i don't know if they gave me it because i'm allergic to some NSAIDS, or maybe they give it to all post-tonsillectomy patients because it is a powerful analgesic.

BTW, i've been thinking about those that don't have tonsils (or had them removed), they could try to take what i took for 1 or 2 weeks (i'm not sure if it was 1 or 2 weeks, but i took the antibiotic until it was empty). That is, to take the antibiotic they prescribe for post-tonsillectomies (i have to check what was the brand, i suppose that is easy to check on many Internet sites) and to take Metamizole, both for 1 week or read the leaflet. The second one (Metamizole) is banned in many countries, so should be tricky to get it, and also, take into consideration that there is a very small risk of agranulocytosis. So, it's on your responsability :P. But i suppose it's a good idea for those who have no problem with their tonsils (either they have no tonsils, or their tonsils don't become inflammed / they don't have tonsil stones).
Hope it helps!

Quasar, do you have acne? My theory is that the tonsil stones is the reason I have acne. Today I had spit out a big tonsil stone. Seems like they get bigger. Maybe because when the tonsils inflame there will be some grooves. And the tonsil stones infect the tonsils. And so it get worse.
So I am going to ask my GP to give me a note for the hospital so they can remove my tonsils.

Hi Vandemolen! I have 0 acne...i never had a big problem with acne. My skin is normal, a little dry maybe. About the stones, well, you know my opinion. I think that, even if you don't had Pois, it would still be a good idea to have the tonsils removed. Tonsil stones cause bad breath...and also you have to lose some time every day, or every few days checking if there's any stone...So...only for that reasons i had them removed. I didn't know it would also help with Pois ;D That was a positive surprise. But i won't lie to you, it's an annoying and painful surgery. I had a week and a half that was very hard to swallow things. But...in the end it's that: 1 week (and a half) of suffering., and then you don't worry again about the stones. If you do it, please go to a good hospital and doctor...There are different methods. I believe one of the better ones is called "coblation".
About Pois...what i can tell you 100% sure, at least in my case, is that the tonsillectomy improved my scalp numbness i suffered after having O. It was mathematical: ALWAYS after having an O. i suffered from a strange feeling in my scalp. It was kind of numbness and headache. Now my scalp is perfect. Even when i move my scalp with my hands, it feels alright. The only symptoms that i still suffer, (but to me are minor compared to the head symptoms) is some stomach bloatness and some asthma maybe (not quite sure) after having an O. But anyway, i always had asthma, so, it's not surprising. About the stomach bloatness, i will go to the doctor to see if i can also improve that.
About the reason of my scalp & headache improvement...i'm not sure why!! I'm not sure if it's been a blood flow issue. Or maybe an immune reason? Maybe Pois is an immune reaction that happens in all the lymph nodes, so removing the tonsils has made that reaction to not happen in the neck/head. I don't know, LOL!!!!

It really is really strange that the tonsillectomy cured your POIS.... but someday we'll have a better idea why.
Somehow, somewhere all these things are somehow related to the POS mechanism.. what ever that is.

Indeed! I'm hesitating between 2 different scenarios:
- that it was good for me because my cryptic tonsils were bad for either my blood flow/immnune system/sleep apnea(?), so, improving that indirectly helped Pois.
or
- that it was good for me because Pois is an immune disease, and being an immune disease it affects the major, or some, lymph nodes. And tonsils are lymph nodes. So, the removal of the tonsils causes a reduction of that immune reaction in that area (head & neck). In the same way that removing the lymph nodes from the stomach area would reduce the immune reaction in the belly.

Just want to share my tonsillectomy experience:
Since puberty I had minor POIS symptoms, which I did not recognize as such at the time. The only thing that seriously did bother me that I was extremely prone to throat infections following sex, I always felt the lymph nodes in my groin area, my neck and throat swell right away. I often woke up the next morning with my tonsils infected, often turning into a full-blown throat infection, often resulting in a long lasting cough after the throat infection was treated.
12 years ago I finally decided to have my tonsils removed. After the tonsillectomy I had a lot less problems with throat infections but I also realized that I was just messing with the symptoms, not treating the underlying cause. I still did feel all of my lymph nodes as well as my throat tissue (the area where my tonsils had been before) swell after sex but it was easier to avoid a full throat infection. My respiratory system did continue to suffer from post-ejaculatory symptoms that seem to impact my immune / lymphatic systems but the resulting dry cough is better to handle than an infection, which often involved fever, etc.
At least for my case I am extremely sure of an auto-immune cause and involvement of the lymphatic system. I believe that for any POIS sufferer who can establish this relationship for himself, and experiences swelling of the tonsils after ejaculation, a tonsillectomy might have a positive effect on symptoms. It is great to hear that Quasar was able to reduce symptoms by 90% but probably this won't work for everybody. I developed extreme POIS several years after the tonsillectomy.
-
The doctor who does the injections said that for me it's a good thing to remove the tonsils. Tonsils play a role in the imune system. And if you are allergic like me (pollen, dust, perfume and more) the imune system is working too hard. I have an appointment at the hospital about 2 weeks. But that's my first visit. I hope they can remove my tonsils about 2 months.

Thanks for sharing your experience. In my case, the tonsillectomy has cured the headache/scap numbness and also the fatigue symptoms. Before the tonsillectomy i could notice that after having sex, i had more tonsil stones.
Now, the only symptoms i have after sex are (that for me are minor compared to what i had): my face becomes a little flushed (i think that is pretty normal), also my skin, specially my HANDS, becomes dry, and i also have some stomach bloating and my asthma becomes worse. (but i always had asthma anyway).
So, yes, i still have some symptoms, but to me are minor, because my main problem with Pois that was making my life miserable was the headache, scalp numbess & fatigue.

I am also allergic to pollen, dust, etc. I hope that a tonsillectomy improves some of your symptoms. Please keep me updated. And also, try to choose a good doctor!!

My operation is about a few weeks. Did the removed also your adenoids? When in POIS my tonsils get irritated and swell a bit. And then I get those tonsils stones. But my nose also gets irritated. So I don't what the cause is. Maybe the adenoids? Or the nasal mucosa.
I read on an website againt allergies that when you get tonsillitis you swallow pus. And that causes acne and the bowels get irritated. That's just my case. I get that.
-
Hello,
Unfortunately in my case POIS is not cured when my tonsils and adenoids were removed. I think diseased tonsils can be effect of the POIS.
-
Hi guys. I'm new and I think a posted this in the wrong place...since you are talking about it here, thought I would repost.
I "cured" my chronic tonsillitis / throat ulcers many years ago without having them out.
Most common toothpastes contain an additive called Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. In some individuals, this additive causes mouth and throat ulcers, especially on the tongue and tonsils. These cause inflammation, fever, pain (including ear pain). Often mistaken for Tonsillitis. Check out this link:
http://www.therabreath.com/canker-sore.html
I switched to an organic toothpaste (without SLS) about 10 years ago and my sore through symptoms went away almost entirely and immediately. I went from having sore throats once or twice a month to a couple of times a year.
Here is a list of toothpastes without SLS: http://www.squidoo.com/toothpastes-without-sodium-lauryl-sulfate
I use the Jason brand. Hope it helps.

I'am having the operation today. I hope my POIS-symptoms will drop after my tonsils been removed. I will try about a few weeks.

Thanks everybody.
It was very hard. Had a lot of pain. But now I am feeling better.
I can't say what the effect will be on my POIS. I had 1 O. But that was the first in a few weeks. Maybe about 2 or 3 weeks I can say what the effect will be without my tonsils. One thing is for sure, I will not have those tonsil stones again. That is a relief, because my throat hurts all the time when in POIS.
-
Removing the tonsils didn't help me much. The good thing is that I don't have tonsil stones. That was one of the bad POIS-symptoms. So it helped a bit, but not like Quasar.

Were you given any painkillers/antibiotics?
-
No antibiotics. But I had heavy painkillers.
Since the tonsils are removed I think I have 10 % less POIS. Now I can have an O. on 4 to 5 days without major problems. But I think the good weather also helps.

I have just found this interesting thread, from January 2013, that I have never read before ( I had not found this forum yet in 2013). Since this member is no longer active and never returned here since 2013, I suppose he is still relieved from his POIS.
I strongly believe there is a systemic immune reaction at play in POIS. In the case of Quasar, it looks like the chronic immune reaction in his tonsills was raising his overall immune reactivity, to a point where, in addition to other factors specific to ejaculation, it would allow POIS to appear. In his case, this tonsils problem looked like the major immune stressor in his body.
If you look further down the thread, member eur79m share he also had a tonsilectomy, but had only a limited relief from it ( not 90% relief like for Quasar), and that later in his life, he has developed an extreme form of POIS. It fits with my view that any immune stressor can create the overall immune over-activity that makes it possible for POIS to manifest. I suppose this member had or has many other immune isssues in his body, so removing the tonsils had not been enough to get rid of POIS in a significant manner.
I think It is the cumulative effect of any unwanted immune over-activity that allows to reach the threshold for POIS manifestation, and this immune stress can come from the sum of any factors like SIBO, Lyme disease, infected tonsils, atopy, stress, leaky gut syndrome, gluten sensitivity, intoxication due to methylation issues, or any other form of chronic immune reaction.
-
Hmmm, sounds interesting.
I always suffered from a somewhat leaky gut, inflamed urethra and an inflamed anus.
It would be funny if POIS was an intensified immune reaction of our unhealed gut.
-
That's exactly my thoughts on pois. I think gut health is extremely important in fighting pois. The gut is also called your "second brain", it is that important.
-
GLC, I wish I had the willpower to do that.
Maybe I wouldn't be so tethered to TRT!

My tonsils were removed almost 6 years ago. Since then I had far less throat problems and almost no sinusitis. Before the operation I had a lot of throat problems and sinsitis because of POIS.
But even without my tonsils maybe I have sleep apnea. Because I sweat a lot and I wake up a few times during sleep. And I wake up with a dry mouth.
-
I've been getting tonsil stones a bit more than usual - I used to get them every few years, but now I have some persistent ones. If I fast for awhile, they pretty much go away, but come back when I eat.
Quantum - I tend to agree with the immune hypothesis. Most of my symptoms seem related or exacerbated by immune response. It started after getting sick while traveling, but then worsened over the years with everything from stressful situations to being around cats and dogs (bad allergies). Unfortunately the reaction is often long lasting or permanent - I've had all kinds of muscular issues recently even when not in POIS, but they're magnified during that period.
Does anyone have thoughts on how to improve immune function over the long term? I eat a very careful diet, methylation support, probiotics, etc.
-
Hi hapl,
To improve the immune system you could also work on improving your sleep quality (https://poiscenter.com/forums/index.php?topic=2502.msg33358#msg33358) and trying an Immune Competence Therapy (https://poiscenter.com/forums/index.php?topic=3151.msg31893#msg31893).

nanna, I get confused on immune system terminologies (and I suspect everyone else is), I think you can perhaps help us understand:
1. What exactly would be meant, by "improving immune system". Is that increasing TReg cells? Is that decreasing TReg cells? or maintaining them at x units?
2. I think if we can get this for every critically significant Innate vs Adaptive components. That would be so helpful.
