Title: Feeling worse after a shower
Post by: Vandemolen on February 06, 2016, 09:05:12 PM
Does anyone have water allergy? I have it since a year. I get sick after taking a shower. The symptoms are just like POIS. Dry mouth, dry lips, dry nose. And itching. It doesn't matter if I use warm or cold water. I use soap without perfume. I think I hot water allergy because of POIS, the use of antibiotics and maybe also because of the desens programm.

Edit: I do not think that I have a water allergy. But I just feel cold and sick after a hot shower.

No, I don't have that. However, hot water (hot showers specifically) can increase my cognitive symptoms like crazy. Also I grew up near the beach, and the salt water seemed to cause my skin to itch somewhat, no idea if it was POIS-related or not because it happened before it. I never really liked the ocean anyway. I don't like being in salt water, plus I also had a slight fear of what I couldn't see under the water like jellyfish or even sharks, yikes. Stuff that could bite or irritate me pretty much.

Since a week I use CBD oil against the water allergy. So far it helps me. I hope to get rid of the water allergy in a fe weeks or months.

Are you talking about itching/stinging all over your body? I have had similar symptoms for close to 40 years. Mine is called "temperature related pruritus". After a shower, if I have a large temperature change (hot or cold) on my skin, I will itch/sting intensely for 15 - 30 minutes. The only thing I have found to help is keep the bathroom at a normal temperature (~ 74 deg), dry off completely before opening the shower door, and immediately putting on pajama bottom and tee shirt after exiting shower. I hope you don't have this, because I'm afraid it will not go away if it is the type of pruritus I have.

Interesting, this last saturaday a guy I play soccer with brought up he is allergicto  heat and he is taking medicine fo it.
It is crazy that allergy to this things exist.

The water allergy is back. Back then I did not know that I had and have candida. I think in my case there is a connection between candida and water allergy. Before this candida episode I am in for 2 months now I made progress. I still needed to use a cbd balm after taking showers, but I was ok. Now even that does not help. I am on Fluconazole. One of the side effects is itching. So maybe that does not help also.

Maybe Water allergy can also be triggered by sexual activity. I mean you have to shower after sex so the shower makes things worse. At least in my case. When I did not have candida hot showers used to give me relief when in POIS.

My doctor said that Mast Cell Syndrome, Hashimoto, POIS and Herpes are all in the same group.

Here it is described that a patient with a water allergy had an increase of Mast Cells:

At Aquagenic urticara you have a rash for an half an hour after the shower. I do not get a big rash. Only itches a bit. But I am feeling cold for the whole day. And sometimes even the next day I feel cold. Even I stay inside, wearing a lot of clothes and the temperature inside is plus 20 degrees (Celcius).

I found this link on this forum posted by Hopeoneday. Thanks. So it could be die-off symptoms from Candida when you shower with hot water.

When I was youger, I remember I used to go to the swimming-pool the day before an important day for me to counter Pois symptoms.

We have evidences that ***something*** goes wrong with blood stream after ejaculation.

- some guys have improvements with sport
- some guys have improvements with niacine or other vasodilators
- some guys have improvements with showers

I'm currently studying a naturopathic strategy wrote by russian doctor Salmanoff.
He thought a lot of health problems are caused by a poor blood/lymphatic stream.
The strategy is to create an unbalance of temperature (cold/hot) betweens organs to create circulation and cure the problem.

A possible application of Salmanoff theory to Pois is to put cold on testicles and hot to liver with hot. With ice packs.
Of course, not extreme temperatures. (5-10°C for cold spot and 40-50°C for hot spot).

I can only take COLD showers! (Brrrrrrrrrr!)

Warm/hot showers kill me, in/out-of-POIS!

Yeah. I too have problems with hot showers, also sunburns.  I believe these are both due to histamine release or something of that nature.

Hot showers ? Cold showers ?

Maybe you are right.
It seems cold showers activate white cells. Maybe it could be positive or negative if yout take it before or after, in Pois or out of Pois, cold or hot !

Lot of combinations....
Maybe put only feets some minutes in cold water could have the same effects. 20 years ago, I use to go to the swimming pool to counter Pois effect. I remember the temperature was "cold" (20°C ?)

I think we didn't work enough on white cells...
Food we take influce white cells : raw vs cooked food. Maybe glycemic index too.

Hotter showers mess me up. For me it's a vasodilation and subsequent blood pooling issue that really taxes the heart and leaves me foggy. What's helped me besides lukewarm/cool showers - wearing clogs or aqua socks in the shower (big relief on leg and foot muscles), raising only 1 arm at a time, making it quick (short hair helps), and resting if possible afterwards, laying down is best. Sometimes having a small snack ready for when you get out is useful too.

I take a standard hot shower, but I make sure that none of the hot water touches my head/neck.

At the end of the shower I turn the temperature down to fairly cold (not freezing!), and wash my hair.

It has worked for me for several years :)

I react badly to showers whether they're hot or cold obviously with hot being the worst but cold still gives a bad reaction also. The only thing that seems to help  me is anadin extra which contains asprin, paracetmomal and caffiene and i need to take this before the shower. I've tried ant acids for the shower with no luck.

It also doesn't make a difference for me if i avoid getting head and neck wet, I can get a bad reaction just from washing my armpits in the sink. Maybe its either from rubbing the lymph nodes or the soap I have no idea. I used to only react badly to showers in POIS but after I started using alpha gpc and choline antidepressants the shower reactions happen outside of POIS. Best thing to do is shower at night

Autonomic instability/endothelial dysfunction/mast cell activity? Put a winter cap/hood on your head and walk around with it inside your house for a while and observe a similar effect. The body doesn't seem to respond properly to changes especially when these changes are large and rapid. Yes, showering the head gives me a worse reaction than the rest of the body. Heat is stress.

Muon, Quantum, anyone? Is there an explanation (MCA or other)  for my terrible reaction (mostly extreme fatigue) to showers, no matter how brief or how warm/cold or how little of the body is showered? Interesting to see Muon’s similar reaction and possible explanation in the adjacent post.

ps - today’s “terrible” reaction seemed to be from focusing the nozzle on my face & head, closeup, to rinse my beard, mustache & hair on top (very little :) )

MCs can respond to pressure. There are other poisers having symptoms elsewhere triggered by pressure. Pressure from the shower independent of temperature:

Taking a cold shower can boost dopamine by as much as 250 percent, according to a study published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology. This is because it can boost mood and productivity all day.

To clarify, the temperature is important - too hot or too cold both have negative effects on me. I set the temperature to 15 degrees C when I wash my hair - you want the water to be neither warm nor cold.

During the first part of the shower when the water is hot, it takes a bit of practice to avoid any of the water hitting your head  :)

Very interesting finding, thanks to Muon's deduction.

This may be helpful for other POISers who have problems with showers ( not my case, though).

One thing to consider is that many (most?) countries don't have high-pressure showers, although I believe they are common in North America. When I stayed at a friend's house in Vancouver, I remember the shower almost taking my head off  ;D ;D ;D

I do think these are mast cell issues and/or problems with sensory nerve endings/brain communication. MCAS/MCMD should be fully investigated IMHO. Also water is made out of electric dipoles, the electric equivalent of magnets basically, I wonder if that property can affect the skin somehow. CBD probably helped him because of the cannabinomimetic control of mast cells and/or it affected sensory nerve fibers (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0923181105000289).

Ranitidine H2 blocker works for me when taken after a shower or water contact, I have tried it in the past taking it every day for 2 weeks and I had brain fog constantly activating from it and my stomach felt like a pressure cooker and also my eyes also became very sore and shrunk in size (closed eyelids) and became extremely bloodshot when I showered(much more than usual)

I will now just take it only after showers/water contact or any time where my brain feels "infected". Since going on detox supplements for mould and candida I can tolerate drugs, supplements and food much better than before so maybe I would be able to take the h2 blocker daily now with no bad effects. I'm also thinking about purchasing Neuroprotek Luteolin, Quercetin + Rutin Complex.

Ranitidine is being taken off the shelves in UK and US because of carcinogens found so I will find another H2 blocker to use.

Muon do you have any ideas why when I take Ranitidine after a shower it gets rid of the horrible feeling in my head and brain but it causes autistic symptoms like eye contact issues and maybe some anxiety also, at the time of taking and in the days afterwards.
If I take more than once in a row it also can activate brain fog and autistic symptoms, and when I tried taking it for two weeks every day I had brain fog activating the whole time and my eyelids became very closed and my eyes look small. Also had incredibly red eyes after showers

Hi Demo

Why your usual pois treatment is not working for hot shower.  I am very much confused.  Only your endocrinologist could provide a clear answer.  Both causes same symptoms but pois treatment not useful for preventing hot shower induced  pois . It's a mystery.

Hope others with the shower problem provide similar clarification whether their pois and showering/bathing  causes same symptoms or different.

For me boh causes similar symptoms and head shower causes much worse  symptoms than pois  .

Post by: Miyagi on April 27, 2022, 10:59:02 AM
I find that wetting my hair, especially the back of my head, with cold tap water clears my mind and lowers my anxiety, pain, itchy eyes and other pois symptoms. When the water dries by evaporation after a few mins, the symptoms return immediately. So ive began walking around with a cold wet towel around my neck and it seems to have the same effect. I guessed that a part of the back of the brain or neck or spine has a problem with overheating or heat sensitivity. When i cool my head/neck, i can actually feel a relaxation in my balls/pelvic floor. I wish i knew whats going on.

The shower issue is very common in CFS.  I had this issue since CFS and POIs simultaneous sudden onset 30 plus years ago. I get very fatigued after I dry myself.  That is very interesting that others noticed that too.    Because the fatigue starts a few minutes after drying.   But I can take long room temp (on the cooler side)  showers and the fatigue does not kick in until after I dry.  If I get into a lake, same thing.  After I dry up I have to lay down.  Note that a lake does not have force.  Each time after i come out I have to lie down for 10 min if I have dried.  Not if I don’t and go back in while very wet.   So keeping wet while at the lake as much as possible minimizes multiple bath reaction.  I do not have an explanation as to why it may happen after I dry.

I use very mild soap.  Otherwise it is murder.

My speculations as to why this maybe happening is that our skin may not be  working well,  our CNS also.  My skin is dry most of the time.   Skin being a connective tissue and not working well may leak stuff in.  Maybe for the same reasons our tubes may leak at ejaculation. Maybe leaky skin and connective tissues is causing an inflammatory reaction for the immune system to clean up what is leaked.

I lay down for 10 to 15 minutes after a shower and a good portion of the fatigue goes away.  I think my CNS also needs to adjust. It feels like my blood is not getting where it should and it is so much work to do anything if I do not lay down first.   Again 15 min laying down right after drying up helps me recover significantly, but not 100%.   I noticed that if I take Vit D2 BEFORE (at least 20 min before) the shower or bath after-effect is greatly decreased.  Note that D2 is anti inflammatory, but also it makes CNS work better, helps hormones, etc. if I take too much, it is excitatory.  So I take 1000 mg of D2 only.  I do not tolerate D3.  It too excitatory for me. A common name for D2 is Ergocalciferol.  i get it from Amazon in drops, about 17 US$ per bottle.  I take 5 drops, that is enough for the day.  And it improves my cognition and energy also.    I reduce D2 in day 2 after O because it can make that hard day worse sometimes.

So why does it wait after drying up?    What a mystery.   I think the whole thing is partially related to not getting the skin well irrigated due to poor perfusion, and our bodies eating up needed (by connective tissues) amino acids to burn them for energy.  I think after O my body desperately needs amino acids to compensate for an impaired glycolysis pathway.  The impairment being greater after O.
