Breathing issues with POIS
« on: May 04, 2021, 06:08:01 PM »
Hello everyone, I hope all is well!

I would like to discuss a breathing issue I have. It is probably one of my most if not the most bothersome chronic symptom I have:

I have been dealing with this issue for about a couple years and it has been getting worse overtime. It is not bad enough where I need to go seek emergency care, but it does become bothersome and worrisome. I have seen my primary care physician (PCP) and the physician’s assistant (PA) for this issue (total of 2 visits), and the PA recommended that I try an inhaler which I did try, but it did not help and it just made it worse. I have also tried a diffuser with Eucalyptus Oil and that also made it worse. I have also tried Buteyko breathing, but I didn’t get much benefit from it. I will probably need to revisit it. Both my PCP and PA recommended that I see a psychiatrist, which I did and then he suggested that I ask POIScenter about this issue, so I will.

The sensation feels like my nasal airways or neck airways are constricting and it is difficult passing air through these airways. I would have to go outside to find relief and sometimes I won’t find any relief going outside until about 10 minutes later. I don’t want to rely on breathing through my mouth. I don’t really notice other symptoms aside from anxiety, when I get these breathing episodes. My breathing is alright when I am outside in decent weather, not so much if it is too hot or too cold. My breathing issue gets worse when I have a mask on for more than an hour, sometimes when I wake up in my sleep (gets better when I walk around to make breakfast), when it is really hot or cold, or when I am in a room where windows/doors are closed or have a lack of windows. I believe POIS can also make this issue worse. I also suspect that it comes from anxiety/social anxiety because there is sometimes anxiety involved when I get these episodes; it is almost like a (anxiety) attack.

Maybe this issue is psychophysiological. Maybe this is a separate issue from POIS. There were times where I didn’t feel anxious or should not be and I still get these breathing episodes. For example and in fact, in Winter 2018, I remember going on a family trip to a mountain that is over 6,140 feet in elevation. I was excited and not anxious. The higher we drove up the mountain, the more I was feeling out of breath, (we were going up the mountain for the snow, but I don’t believe cold temperatures affected me at this point.) When we reached our destination (about more than halfway up the mountain and the whole area covered in snow), I got out of the car and I had trouble breathing seconds later. I can’t describe the sensation I had, all I remember is that I had trouble breathing when I got out of the car. The cold temperature may have played a role at this point, but I don’t remember complaining too much about the cold. I have been to the same destination back in winter 2016, and I did not have any trouble with breathing.

I suspect that my breathing issue may be from weak POIS allergy symptoms like runny nose and post nasal drip with increased mucus production after O. If this is the case, I will try to experiment with antihistamines. I have read on a POIScenter thread that MCAS could be one cause. I have also read many other threads about POISers with breathing issues some of them with solutions, and I am going to look into them. Deep breathing exercises help the most with this problem, but they can also sometimes be uncomfortable to perform when the breathing issue is at its worst. Many jobs require face masks and it is difficult searching for a job knowing this issue can affect me when I have a face mask on for too long.

While I make another appointment with my primary care doctor for this, since I have POIS and I know this breathing issue will affect me again, I thought I’d ask, has anyone else dealt with this issue? And if so, have you been able to treat it?

Thanks for reading!

I have acid reflux that is intermittent and I think that is what may be causing a good percentage of my breathing issues. Some people with acid reflux complain about the feeling of their neck airways getting constricted, and that is what makes it difficult for them to breathe. I do notice these breathing episodes sometimes after eating a medium-large meal, or wearing a face make for too long. Diaphragmatic breathing can help with this issue and I have yet to know if it something that can help me in the long run. Managed stress and rest can also help me with this issue. I hope the POIS research team can find some answers as to what is going on soon.

I?ve done two things to try and clear that neck/breathing issue. First, AirPhysio, it seemed to be somewhat effective as that?s what it was designed to do. But the past few weeks I started to use Orange Burps for reflux and I?ve greatly reduced the issue.  I?ve been spitting up the mucus when it has been arising.

POIS seems to make my insides jumpy, I?ve worked on strengthening my intercoastals... that helps me to keep breathing, however awkwardly, but I don?t know how to overcome the internal instability.

What do you think is causing your breathing issue? Have you’ve been able to manage or treat it?

i too notice myself have to breath through mouth sometimes, instead of nose

if i lift the tip of my nose a little bit i breath better
it makes a big difference

i have had theories that my water uptake, because gut is impaired, is not functioning and that makes the nose clogg up

if i drink a lot of water things get better

i also shower the nose every single morning

daily nose cleansing is highly recommended

sauna baths can sometimes worsen or improve nose problems, if im in pois mode it gets a lot worse, almost crazy worse, if im in balance out of pois it can help

strong dose of niacin improves nose problems almost 100%

sweden is most often cold and dark, this does not help this problem

summertime helps because im more outside

i know that dust and pollen and not cleaning reguraly at home worsens things a lot

recommendations..  clean at home, drink water, take niacin, stay outside, sport mildly, eat well, clean nose at least once a day

Hi Daysleeper! Interesting! So it could because that mucus is causing the issue. Did you ever get a diagnosis that has given you a prescription for AirPhysio, if there is a prescription required. My acid reflux has been improving by staying away from the foods that trigger it, but Orange Burps is something I can experiment with in the future. I totally understand why you are trying to strengthen your intercostals as that may also be part of the problem. I have weak muscles around and on the intercostal muscles, and it is probably why I easily get pain in those areas. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Mike Sweden!

Breathing through the mouth does feel a little bit better, but I still think it is best to breathe through your nostrils as much as possible, to prevent getting used to long-term mouth breathing. I can breathe a little bit better when I lift the tip of my nose too. I don't notice much of a difference when I drink lots a water, but I will keep an eye out for this. My gut is impaired as stated on my case thread. I've recently had theories that it is mucus from POIS causing the issue, but I don't have anything to prove this. I do believe that it is the chest or lungs causing the issue, and not the nostrils directly.

Staying outside in a nice cool temperature helps alot too. Too cold temperatures does not help my situation either. Sorry to hear about your climate situation.

For the Niacin treatment, did you have the flush? The flush is what made my breathing issue worse. If you did have the flush, did you have relief after it?

I agree with the dust and pollen solution. I used to do this too but I have been caught up with other things, that I'd forget. Will start to do again. I also recommend not staying too long with dirty pets like dogs and cats.

Thank you for your other recommendations!

I forgot to say, I had a Pulmonary Function Test done almost a month ago and it was abnormal. This leads me to believe that the issue is a chest/lung condition. I found slight relief when I tried the Albuterol inhaler for the test, but when I tried the inhaler again at home (in a more calm state), it didn't help at all. In fact, I felt a little worse. I didn't even feel like trying it again a second time.

Hi Kit

Breathing issues uncontrolled by asthma medicine was my long term problem since childhood.
I am 44 years old now with severe lung damage called bronchiectasis in both my lungs and  completely bedridden.

Pois causes severe breathing problems in some of us and so  meet a pulmonologist  for curing it.
I also have the gut problems and I think lung problems are mainly due to gut inflammation.

I am in the end stages of my life so finding a cure for me is not going to be very useful.

But other members who are having breathing problems please consult a lung specialist who will help you with the breathing difficulty.

After orgasm especially next 24 hours there is vasoconstriction induced in the breathing airways as you mentioned independent of my psychological state, the longer I abstain the more it improves

Hi Aswinpras0,

I am very sorry to hear about your bronchiecstasis. I really do hope that things get better for you. I can't imagine how difficult your situation must be.

Seeing a Pulmonologist is very likely for me, if my PCP decides he is unable to help me with my breathing issue. I totally understand why you think gut problems could be the cause of your lung problems. For me, it could have been from acid reflux, stress, or from a poor digestive system in the past year or year and a half. I will need to track this down.

Is there anything you are doing at all to treat your bronchiecstatis at the moment?

I agree. For me, it becomes difficult to manage my health in general when this issue gets in the way. So seeing a lung specialist is very important.

Take Care!

Hi Journey! I can get the "asthma-like attacks" in and out of POIS. I think the trigger for me is my posture or dust and pollen. After O and 24 hours later, my breathing sometimes improves or it doesn't at all.

Thanks Kit

At present I am on my own treatment.  Doctors are good but I am not responding to any treatment and my lungs have bronchiectasis which means enlargement of bronchi in most part of my lungs.  The cause is  I believe mast cell driven chronic inflammation due to mold, dust, pollen, other aero allergens, reactions to temperature, food etc.

Very thick mucus accumulates in lungs due to this and which further damages the lungs.  I have been advised for lung transplant..  But I cannot afford it and also don't have a pollution free environment in my place to stay to recover in case I do a lung transplant.

Also my weight is now only 36 kg for a height of 178 cm.  which is a major problem for any surgery.

I think I am the only one in  this entire forum to have Pois and a lung damage mostly caused by same factors which cause my pois.

If by some chance I can improve my weight I can think about any treatment..  But gaining weight is very difficult like many of our friends here in this forum.

Hi aswinpras06,

I'm glad to hear you are being seen by doctors. Very interesting thought there you have about mast cell driven chronic inflammation.

I believe too that my POIS is the cause of many, if not all, of my chronic symptoms, as for the cause of my POIS, I am not exactly sure.

I can only gain weight by eating. I may be able to lift some weights to gain weight, but I am unable to go any further and turn it into a hobby at the moment because I get a strange "arousal feeling" when I do leg workouts like squats and lunges. With this feeling comes along exercise intolerance, like my body is heating up and my breathing gets shallow and I can't complete the set any further. This feeling is less severe when I do upper body workouts. This could be a clue for me and I am still investigating. For this reason, I am avoiding lifting weights at the moment to prevent muscle imbalances.

If you do decide to gain weight, please do so safely. I am sure it can help you to open up different treatment options for you.

Take care!

Thanks Kit  for your caring advice.  I  will focus on improving my gut health and digestion to gain weight.

Thanks Muon for continuing your efforts to find a cure for me.  The herbs work or not but I get  mental peace from knowing that many good people are there caring for me.

Use the herb Usnea its extremely potent, a lot of the herbs in that video are weak. I'm using Usnea now to treat a Ruminococcus gnavus overgrowth and I'm getting very strong die off symptoms from it which is a good thing.
