D-Ribose for general fatigue?
« on: August 04, 2020, 05:02:18 AM »
Has anybody tried it? Takes >12 days before seeing effects (4g/day).

Seems to be popular in the CFS crowd.

"d-Ribose has been used to treat many pathological conditions, such as chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and myocardial dysfunction. It is also used to reduce symptoms of cramping, pain, stiffness, etc after exercise and to improve athletic performance"

I started taking it yesterday, I'll report back end of the month.

Probably synergistic with Q10, ALCAR / Carnitine and Creatine.

Long term use might not be safe, who knows. https://www.reddit.com/r/cfs/comments/frv2us/dribose_warning/

Ribose Accelerates Gut Motility and Suppresses Mouse Body Weight Gaining
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4870713/
"Ribose oral treatment in wild type mice also enhanced bowel motility and rendered mice resistance to high fat diets. The suppressed weight gain was resulted from enhanced ingested food excretion"
(Obviously we don't want too much motility)

I've tried it as POIS is a minor problem for me compared to CFS-like symptoms (like a permanent POIS crash that never lets up).

I find D-Ribose is helpful, but the same way maybe fenugreek or garlic is helpful for POIS. It makes the crash less severe, maybe smooths out the extreme symptoms. But it's far from the panacea that Teitelbaum proposes. I tried taking small amounts, increasing to the 5g three times per day, etc. I would put this under the category of worth trying, but don't expect huge benefits.

I have a very different perspective on POIS, I view it as an energy (ATP) crisis situation, where your body enters a 7 day period where energy gets critically diverted to essential bodily functions, which can give rise to vulnerabilities - culminating into symptoms POIS'ers experience.

Does D-Ribose work?  Hell yes.  On me 1g is as effective in giving energy as a class-II highly restricted dopamine medications.
Do I take it?  No.  I dont like the concept of a sugar like molecule.
Personally I would suggest L-Carnitine (mixed with ALCAR). It also produces ATP, though it functions through the mobilization of fatty acids (instead of the sugar/carb pathways that Ribose takes)

But yes, D-Ribose works.  To feel its effect, try lifting weights (before taking d-ribose and after).
POIS Free, 2+ yrs (occasional/predictive lapses)
Pois symptoms: Peripheral (Skin: Urticaria, dryness, pale blotchy skin), Exasperation of: [Nerve weakness, Muscle weakness + Mental (CNS: Brain Fog, Irritation, Isolation, Speech lethargy, Anxiety)].
Other conditions: ASD, ADD, GA

Doesn't work like that for me, but yes - that's also the theory for how it can help CFS with ATP issues. I've tried anywhere from tiny amounts of D-Ribose up to about 15g per day - for general use, only after bad POIS or CFS crashes. It's moderately helpful, but nothing amazing for me.

I've tried ALCAR, Q10, D-Ribose, NAC, liposomal C, Taurine, methylated B vitamins, SAMe, ALA, Alpha GPC, etc.
