B6 to lower prolactin?
« on: August 13, 2018, 03:47:26 PM »
Hi, I found an interesting thread on the nofap forum:

https://www.nofap.com/forum/index.php?threads/vitamin-b6-to-support-your-recovery-long-post-but-tl-dr-at-bottom.135163/

This person says that a high dose of vitamin B6 is capable of reducing prolactin levels directly after orgasm, reducing the severity of a crash.

Of course, this applies to people who suffer from porn addiction, and not necessarily POIS in general, but still it could be interesting.
Male, INTJ. POIS symptoms: red eyes, ear-pain, anxiety, speech problems, pale/ugly skin, stiff neck, double chin, tinnitus, light sensitivity. POIS even after stimulation without O.

I might not be the first to say it, but maybe POIS is just a result of our brain or CNS (don't know how to explain it) being incapable of recover succesfully from refractory period (like a normal man can)

Taken from Wiki:

Quote
Another chemical which is considered to be responsible for the male refractory period is prolactin,[3][8] which represses dopamine, which is responsible for sexual arousal.

So we end up being stucked with low amounts of dopamine and high amounts of prolactin, unable to recover fast, taking us at least a day or more to balance this dopamine/prolactin relation. Dopamine depletion symptoms
match with most POIS affected individuals symptoms.

I would like to try PRL inhibitory drugs before orgasm or something which lowers PRL to restore the normal balance. Sorry for my bad english guys.

I'll quote here some interesting things for us said in OP's link:

Quote
Prolactin also counters the effects of Dopamine. This actually plays an important role in sex.

You see, when you reach orgasm, Prolactin levels become significantly elevated, to counter the elevated levels of Dopamine that you have during sex. This does a few things to a guy: Kills his erection, drops his arousal to near zero or zero, and makes him want to stop. That's why such a dramatic change can happen after orgasm - from being completely into the sex, to having no arousal whatsoever.

It's also why some people report feeling bad/low energy after orgasm.. because Dopamine isn't just there to keep you horny. Dopamine is your mood, how good you feel, how energetic you feel, etc. The moment you block its effects with elevated Prolactin, you feel low energy, demotivated, anxious, etc. Thankfully this effect is very temporary, as Prolactin levels quickly return to normal, restoring normal Dopamine function

Quote
Well, we need to look back at Dopamine again. Dopamine is very important. If you have low Dopamine levels, or your receptors are desensitised to its effects, you will feel bored all the time, low energy, anxious, etc. You'll have poor quality erections, or no erections at all. Your libido will tank, and you'll feel completely disinterested in sex with your partner. You'll feel very tired when you wake up in the mornings, and getting out of bed will be more difficult. It'll feel like something's wrong or broken with you.

I'll try next time with B6 immediately after orgasm, yesterday I had two O's with my gf and today woke up wasted by POIS, hope it gets better next time.

I tried it yesterday. I had a less intense O, but the rest was great, and POIS symptoms were much reduced compared to "normal". I think indeed it is related to the refractory period.

I took 22mg of zinc in the morning (I take this every morning), 200mg of P-5-P (active form of B6) and some magnesium bisglycinate right before sex.

The combination of these supplements is similar to a supplement called "ZMA" which is used by bodybuilders a lot, apparently.

I'm not sure about the long-term effects of taking these supplements though.

After O, I put a little but of thiamine on my tongue (like 30mg or so). For me this tends to reduce the brain-fog a little, but if I use too much (more than 100mg), it makes breathing more difficult.

By the way, I'm also taking B5, taurine, ALA, copper, B12, methylfolate, myo-inositol on a regular basis.

Clearly, another effect of B6 is to help magnesium to come into cells instead of calcium.
So, for this reason and for prolactine blocking function, it woth to be tested.

Yes, good point, @b_jim.

Another thing that may be related to prolactin is exercise intolerance. Some POISers have reported this, and I too have this problem when exercise intensity reaches a certain threshold. See this (note this publication is about females, whereas I am male):

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3080465

Another correlation exists between prolactin-sensitivity (through 5HT2 receptors) and OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). I suffered from OCD long before I had POIS. See:

This gets better and better as I see that we, POISers, have a lot of things in common. About that exercise thing, it happenes something like that to me, I workout, go to the gym 5 days a week, but if I train to hard, if the effort is to high, while, for example, doing a deadlift or squat workout (compound movements which tax the CNS) I got easily and quickly brain fog and fatigue. This is happening more frecuently since a few months, I can't progress at my lifts, it seems to me that my CNS is significantely weaker than the average people.

About your OCD, I have diagnosed ADHD with some inclination towards depression and serious mood disorders. Seems to me that most POISers share a lot of physical and mental health issues.

exercise intolerance :

We need to describe this.
In Pois, I have bad feeling with exercice. Bad stamina and huge anxiety after exercice.

The idea I have at the moment is : KEEP THE MG !

I have the feeling that orgasm/ejaculation drains my magnesium explaining lot of things, not all.
I will try a new supplement with B6 and I should try transdermal form too.

@Scrub I actually had to stop doing lat pulls because they make me mentally fatigued for almost a week. Now I reduced my workout to a level that still feels comfortable, while I still feel happy about the results. I'm also more focused on other aspects of my physique now, such as good posture.

Regarding mental issues, it could be that people who have them are predisposed to POIS with mental sides. I sometimes wonder if I used sex and masturbation (and porn) too much as an escape from my mental issues, aggravating my problems, and possibly inducing POIS. But perhaps the explanation is more physical (like sensitivity to prolactin).

@b_jim Keeping the Mg sounds like a good idea. I noticed that my B6 caps actually contain Mg (magnesium-taurate, which could be a good form to try if taurine helps you). Also keep in mind that B6 might start to work only at a specific dose. I used 200mg (which is quite a lot but still considered safe from what I've read, at least short-term).

IMPORTANT: make sure you take the (active) P5P form of B6, otherwise it will start to compete with the endogenous P5P (the P5P present naturally in your body), and that may cause cell-death and neuropathy, and nasty stuff like that. See: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16320662
