I have psychosomatic pois & it’s almost cured completely
« on: September 22, 2017, 03:32:00 PM »
I'm a 22 year old guy who suffered from pois since 17 atleast(I might have suffered before that, perhaps in a milder form). My symptoms have been reduced by approximately 90% since June 2017 & further 5 percentage point since August 2017. My symptoms can be explained well by Dr. Waldinger’s first & third cluster:

Cluster 1 (general cluster): extreme fatigue, exhausted, palpitations, problems finding words, incoherent speech, dysarthria, concentration difficulties, quickly irritated, can not stand noice, photophobia, depressed mood;

But all other cognitive faculties were also adversely affected.

Cluster 3 (head cluster): headache, foggy feeling in the head, heavy feeling in the head;

My productivity was reduced by approximately two thirds. This would last the remainder of the day + 1-2 days after. If I orgasmed twice the severity of my symptoms would be a lot worse, but duration would remain the same mostly(one time I suffered for a full week though). Ibuprofen & Niacin would each give me about 50% relief but no additive effects in combination.

I've never had an actual nocturnal emission where I orgasm or ejaculate a non-negligible amount, yet when I was 21 as i began abstaining from masturbating for longer periods of time I did feel my regular pois symptoms after just sexual dreams. My theory at the time was that this was an actual NE & just a very small amount of semen had triggered my symptoms(believing the allergy causality applied to me). I tried to masturbate about every third day figuring these ‘pseudo NEs’ wouldn’t occur then. This worked temporarily but these Pseudo NE’s would eventually occur every other day at which point I decided to abstain regardless and get a better understanding of psychosomatic disorders. I was always entertaining a psychosomatic cause but my agnosticism wasn’t enough to get much relief. I would wake up from my sleep if my dreams got sexual so as to prevent my day from being ruined. I remember one night where I was sleeping very lightly & had a brief sexual dream & I immediately woke up yet had pois the rest of the day.  The ridiculousness of this plus it having gotten more frequent made me call bullshit on it & I now strongly believed it was psychosomatic on an intuitive level. If this was psychosomatic I figured pois after orgasm was as well. I then read various introductory stuff, learning how varied & severe psychosomatic disorders can be. Then Pseudo NE finally just seized soon after in May of 2017 and in late May/early June I managed to have 90% reduction in symptoms after orgasms(with no use of either ibuprofen or niacin). Since August I’ve considered orgasming once of negligible side effects. Twice is still too costly, but I expect to overcome this.

I’m a guy who is very much prone to psychosomatic disorders, having had several others in the past, such as frequent headaches & hyperacusis & others where it seems likely the cause but not totally sure.

It might sound horribly trivial, but that seems to be the case quite often with treatments of psychological issues. It was this increased conviction where on an intuitive level I was very set on it being psychosomatic(after the Pseudo NE deterioration). This I think had the single biggest effect. Also reading about psychosomatic disorders in general further increased my conviction. learning how varied, & that symptoms can be more severe than mine. Another thing I did was trying to find flaws in the disorders so as to make it seem more plausibly psychosomatic(this was only easy with the Pseudo NE aspects though). I thought full blown pois from brief sexual dreams was ridiculous, especially since I didn't orgasm or ejaculate at all. Also the fact that I'm prone to psychosomatic disorders in general increased my conviction.
Also Saying "it's psychosomatic", & coming up with every argument for why, was something I did if symptoms were creeping on.

sorry, I need this to be paraphrased, so you are saying that for you it was all in your head, i.e. not real, and the moment you reconciled with the fact that pois is not real, you felt relieved from all the symptoms?

That is correct. But snapping out is not always easy. People can suffer indefinitely after realizing it's psychosomatic.

How many orgasms can you have now every week without having symptoms?

Was your symptoms before consistent after every orgasm ?

Thanks for the information,

Once every other day leaves me with negligible symptoms. Twice in the same day is slightly too costly(but still 90% reduction from what it used to be). Frequencies between that I can't say. My symptoms have been largely consistent over all these years, there's only been a handfull of brief periods where symptoms were worse.

This is actually a really interesting post. I can see how most people may think it is absolutely ridiculous, being how real and severe symptoms are in many cases.

However, I would like to add that this guy's experience does make a fair bit of sense. There are very few people who suffer POIS as badly as I have. The last "treatment" method I would ever imagined to have worked is the practice of presence/mindful meditation which essentially requires disidentification from "thought". After weeks of consciously disassociating from the mind and actively staying present without thought, my POIS symptoms went from being unquestionably unmanageable (and if you had met me in a POIS cycle, you would surely understand what I mean), to quite manageable. I would say a 40% reduction in my symptoms. It still wasn't comfortable, but I was able to go out in a POIS cycle without being noticeably "off key" to the average person.

That being said, there is no doubt in my mind that orgasm causes a change in chemistry that causes some disturbance. Not being able to find words and concentrate to such a large degree, at least to my mind, means there is something very real going on inside. That being said, the degree to which this change in chemistry is worsened by psychosomatic ideas is an interesting question.

And in a sense, by calling bullshit on it, you have disassociated yourself from your thoughts (which used to tell you you had POIS), and that is a significant shift in consciousness.

What amazes me is that your POIS has totally disappeared... Incredible.

Great news, congratz!!

Michael,

Try to meditate everyday at least 20min 2 times a day. It might do much more that 40%

I have to say this is confusing and little disappointing to me.  I have spent a long time chasing docs (well, not recently) and all have jokingly brushed my concerns aside and have assured me MB is good, that sex and o's are good, and what I am narrating to them is just an "old fable" that is contra to science.  And as a consequence, I have convinced myself over last decade that this is all in my head - so dont believe it.  Not that it helped much on POIS symptoms, except the placebo effect maybe which I'll give at max 10% relief; until I hit this forum 2 months ago :) and voila this forum really gave me a huge sense of relief upon finally learning that this was not all in my head and that this was "real".  But now it seems this forum is also saying (at least some members) that yeah POIS may just be nothing???  I'd really love to hear from our resident experts nanna1 and quantum their views on this.

Hi Fathom, and every one,

To answer your question, Fathom, I have already written on the forum that I am convinced there is more than one type of POIS, because people are relieved by so many different supplements or method, and no single one is efficient for everyone.   My POIS Types Chart was made to try and sort all those different treatments and different types.

What IntheBrainFog is sharing here is yet still another type of POIS, that we could safely call "pure psychosomatic POIS".  From my point of view, this type is not the main type, and, be re-assured, all your symptoms are not in your head, and all POIS cases are not purely psychosomatic in origin.

I am happy for IntheBrainFog that he has found relief to his symptoms  ( and thanks for sharing your POIS story, IBF ! ).  High level of stress is not good for any problem, and high anxixety and high stress can worsen any condition.   In his case, the worsening from his stress/anxiety was the main cause of his POIS symptoms, and who knows, maybe the one cause.  But, take notice of IBF final comment at the the end of his post:

I’m a guy who is very much prone to psychosomatic disorders, having had several others in the past, such as frequent headaches & hyperacusis & others where it seems likely the cause but not totally sure.

This.   It is not the first time that he has psychosomatic problems.  He may have a tendency to develop such problems.   The human mind is very strong, and emotions are very strong as well.  In certain individual, this manifest in very severe symptoms.   But many POIS sufferers do not have this tendency, and the cause of their POIS is to be found elsewhere.

In my overall POIS control method, I have parts, like meditation, yoga, psychotherapy, that aim at the stress/psychosomatic components of POIS that I may have.  But I still need my pre-pack of supplements,  these stress managing techniques wouldn't be enough on their own.   If someone, like IBF, gets total relief with auto-suggestion, and though thoughts reprogramming, eliminating negative beliefs, that's great.  There is another member that has mentioned prayer as the source of his relief, and to me, that's along the same line.  But for most members, they may meditate and do yoga for hours each day, and pray for hours with the most sincere heart, and this will not eliminate their POIS.  And not because they didn't meditate correctly, or they didn't pray with enough faith, but because their POIS is of another type, which will not respond to purely mental/emotional/spiritual approaches. Personally, I prefer to combine both science and consciousness, and it is how I control my POIS.

Of course, you can have all sorts of hybrid cases, where you have, let's say, an immune dysfunction of a neurological dysfunction, based on real SNPs  ( small genetic mutation that hinder some specific pathways in the biochemistry of the body), and, added to that, some high anxiety that just worsen the condition.   And, we all no POIS generates anxiety and is very frustrating, so, you may have a real, physical problem, and this problem may get amplified by frustration, stress, anxiety, and even, a depression secondary to POIS.   So, I think it is possible to have a "basic POIS", which have metabolic causes, that is worsened by a psychosomatic "add-on".

It has to be clear that it is not because there are some cases of POIS that are mostly of psychosomatic origin that ALL of POIS cases are.  This would be a totally wrong assumption.

So, yes, it is great for many to find some reassurance on this forum that they are not alone in the world with this problem, and that it is not all in their head.  If you need further comforting, I invite you to read the excellent letter that Observer have shared today in another thread, at http://poiscenter.com/forums/index.php?topic=2527.msg21918#msg21918 ( English version at the bottom), in order to help another member with one of the many negationist physician who would like to believe, indeed, that all POIS case are purely psychosomatic, because they haven't found yet any test to diagnose it.

First, many congrats to IntheBrainFogII for your success story.

Thanks Quantum your response was very enlightening.  I am starting to think of a pattern emerging, but maybe I'll start a new thread for it.

Wish it was this simple for all of us poisers,he is not the first guy in this forum with psychosomatic type of pois,so I guess it's worth a try to consider psychosomatic root for our pois,maybe a few of us have it psychosomatic.my immunlogist thinks that my immune system is probably responsible for my pois symptoms(great doctor he was aware of pois before seeing me,and took my problem seriously from the start)so I dont think I have psychosomatic pois type,but I grew up in a Islamic country where they told us in schools that masterbation cause,mental problems, back pain and blindness,and I believed them in that time,now my symptoms are brain fog,itchy eyes and back pain which are related to those symptoms they were telling us in school,so I think there is a little chance that for me that its psychosomatic,I guess its worth a check ,does anyone have contact information from this guy or anyone who had psychosomatic type of pois?and I have no stress,can you have a psychosomatic disorder without stress?does anyone have an article related to psychosomatic disorders?
