Phototherapy / Infrared Sauna
« on: October 12, 2016, 12:47:30 AM »
Has anybody tried near-infrared or other phototherapy for POIS? The symptom set phototherapy with near-infrared light is described as treating sounds very similar to what I experience with POIS.

I began thinking about this after listening to a recent podcast on the topic ( https://blog.bulletproof.com/light-hacking-349/ ) by Dave Asprey.

Part of my POIS symptoms is extreme sensitivity to light for several days; I can get migraines from afternoon sunlight or fluorescent bulbs, screens... whereas red lights (such as in saunas, certain restaurants) seem to have the opposite, calming effect. (The rest of my POIS is lots of inflammation in my body and increased allergies, brain fog...)

Next year I may be able to test phototherapy for myself, but I'm wondering if anybody else out there has already tried it or already owns this type of near-infrared sauna. The research I'm finding seems to indicate specific IR frequencies, such as 850nm for anti-inflammatory effects. It appears many saunas are not designed for this specific purpose and emit other IR frequencies, and it is unclear whether the IR needs to be applied to the whole body or just parts of it (Dave Asprey mentions a device that targets the head and eyes, for example).

LMK your thoughts. Thanks!

  • Use Adaptogens and Antioxidants, they can help.

I also got interested in this topic now. I wish I researched this earlier, I thought is was bogus stuff but given how people are responding positive to sunlight I'm now a believer.

Dropping some keywords for search function:
* Photobiomodulation (PBM)
* Low-level laser therapy (LLLT), cold laser therapy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-level_laser_therapy

I bought a therapy device for around 500 EUR with two modes (so NOT an infrared sauna):
* red light (600something nm)
* infrared light (800something nm)

My plan is to use both wavelengths on face, upper body and neck(thyroid stimulation)
And just red light on testicles (dubious if it improves testosterone, but it will influence the Leydig cells, sertoli cells etc. NOTE: Infrared heat is bad for sperm).

One of my only remaining strong POIS symptoms from sex nowadays is heavy fatigue in evening after orgasm and my goal is to fix it with this (besides blood sugar swings I guess, i don't expect this to influence this).

Random hypothesis: Energy production in testticles is somehow impaired and red light therapy can help by helping with ATP production in mitochondria in whatever cells the testicles might have.
