I just joined, but I'm not new to POIS.  I ran into the Naked Scientists thread a few years ago and recently revisited to find a lot of great new resources like this site. :)

I have my own forum site and know the problem of spammers all too well.  And have them beat. :D I can probably help a bit in this department.  I know how much time can be lost fighting them.

One suggestion I would make is to somehow make it more friendly to a newbie that wants to post.  There's a lot to read and a lot of great information here.  So much so that it is a bit intimidating to figure out where to make a "Hi!, I'm..." post telling your story.

I think the Lifestyle Diary is a good place for introductions that can continue as a personal experience thread, but it doesn't currently feel that way.

I looked up the suggestion you made about the SMF Spam Blocker. I have the code there that I want to install. Don't feel comfortable installing it blind, but will probably edit in the code they show on the page.

It's a pain. You do a bunch of Search Engine Optimization and all it does is attract spammers. Well, about 1000 spammers for each newbie.

WITHOUT RESEARCH THERE WILL BE NO CURE!
Sessions 5 to 9 days, mostly Flu-like, joints, digestion problems, light cognitive.
Niacin has changed my lif though, now 1 day MAX.
Somewhere in this interaction with Niacin is the answer!

I don't remember if SMF has a question and answer system for registration, but I know that's worked wonders for me.  And new user moderation that you check on stopforumspam.com.  They have plugins for that system too that work very well.

Yeah, you can download the plugin, or go to a page that shows the code to change. There's very little so I'll probably do it manually.

Sounds good.  That's what I usually do whenever I can.  That way I know what's going on. :)

http://poiscenter.com/db/collaborator_list.php

When I changed over from the other site to this site, unfortunatley I lost the most recent version that shows all of the address info, but it IS still in the database.

Enter everything you can, and then make sure the entry shows up in the database. Even though it doesn't show all of the address data, it is in the database.

As soon as I get to it I'll clean up the program to show all of the information.

In the meantime, if someone sees an entry that interests them and but can;t find the address data that they need, let me know and I'll get it for you.

I just went to the database, and saw that some no brained idiots where putting in their garbage SPAM data.
What scum!

Bear with me, I've removed the junk for now. Everything has to be 6 times harder than it needs to be for idiots like that. I'll put some controls on the DB.

Is it possible to make all the posts at this forum available to be seen in a single thread format such as they appear in the "most recent posts" section except with all of the posts available to be seen and not just the recent posts? I think some people here don't check the forums often enough and thus miss a lot of the posts.

Also can we make the "most recent posts" link bigger and put it at the top? I have a feeling that some haven't been able to find it and that new users won't check to look for it all the way at the bottom in the tiny font it's currently in.

The main WEB page www.poiscenter.com has space for two featured posts of the forum.

The present ones have been there for a while.

Any suggestions for two good ones we could select to place there now. Something that reflects our activity, would be useful for newcomers, and promote our cause?

Hey everybody,

On every post there's a "report to moderator" link. If you see a spammer selling hs crap, just click on that link and Demo or I will be informed, just in case we don't catch it ourselves.

I have a spam filter, but it still lets one every other day through. But it has helped me a lot. Since I started with the filter about 3 or 4 months ago, it has filtered 5300 spammers!!

Before I was doing it by hand.

The good news is, that this means we are getting more exposure every day.... just that the wrong people respond  :(

On our main page at www.poiscenter.com there's a link to our RSS. This link will let you read all the latest posts as they show up on the forum.

Often your mail client has a configuration center for RSS as well as mail. Go there and where it asks for a link, use the one below:

I am confused about the difference between
naked science,
pois center
and immortal hair
and google all link or come together.

May be an impossible thing to do considering there are always several websites on one topic.  Thanks!
Im the wife of a man suffering from POIS. 300 Niacin. Feel free to give your wife my email address!

Hi Demografx

I have'nt conversed with you for a few years, we did some exchanges on the naked scientists board.
I wonder if we can change this site's home page, to something much more simpler and easier to access and understand.
Possibly into 4 sections only     1) User Experiences    2) Treatments    3) Possible Causes     4) Research
All the subsections would fall below these titles. Users would now click the subject they are interested in, read the latest post and reply.

I think it would increase the user friendly level of this site.

I agree that this would definitely help newcomers to find information.  I revisited all the sections and the information is a big jumbled.  We have so much information and data mining the site can't be hard for someone in POIS, poor soul!
