As we all know, there are just as many ways to deal with POIS as there are people that suffer from it. Most people agree that Niacin and some of of b complex is a part of the answer, others find that different things work for them. This post is not meant to provide an answer or a cure, neither is it meant to guide people to start doing what I'm doing. It's simply meant as inspiration and I'm hoping that what works for me may also help others on the way, in their search for liberation from this illness.
Over a year ago I started taking Hidroxil, which contains B1, B6 and B12. It helped me a lot but I kept having concerns about going over the recommended dosages and building up too much vitamin b in my body. After a year of taking hidroxil daily, I was confirmed in this, my B6 levels were slightly high. I started breaking down the components of Hidroxil and bought the individual vitamins to better be able to control the amount of B1, B6 and B12 I took. I cut down on the B6 and noted no difference in the effect after an O.
I still had POIS after an O though, but only about 20-25% of a full POIS without any vitamins. I stopped using the vitamins for a week or so and immediately fell back in the POIS hole without this "protection". It felt like being dragged into a dark hole, being tied down and being unable to speak clearly for a day or two, and it brought back memories of the time before I found this forum.
I then started to add different vitamins to my daily dosage, all within safe limits of course. I should also mention that I don't take any other medication just for the sake of it. What made a big difference for me was adding Krill oil and Zinc to the mix. I also bought C vitamins and A vitamins, just to try and see if that had an effect. But the Krill oil and Zinc combined with the b vitamins made the big difference.
My situation now is that I (of course) still have some amount of POIS but I would say that it's down to 10% or so. I'm training to be a commercial pilot and I can now fly a plane for many hours without being hugely affected by POIS the day after an O.
To sum it up this is what I take:
1 x GNC b1 300mg
1 x Zinc 50mg (any brand)
1 x Sundown b12 500mcg
1 x Sundown b6 100mg
1 x Nature's Bounty 1000mg Krill oil
1 x Vitamin C 1000mg (any brand)
1 x Vitamin A & D3 (5000 UI A, 400 UI D)
Yes, it's a lot of tablets to take every morning, but for me it's worth it. I feel that I can function again and live almost free of POIS until someone comes up with a definite cure.
