Some very interesting research going on....

I encourage everyone to read the link above in its entirety, there is research going on right now using Ketotifen(allergy pills, but only allergy eye drops in US) to treat fibromyalgia muscle pain and IBS. Ketotifen is a mast cell stabilizer, preventing it from releasing its pro inflammatory mediators. Look at wikipedia for everything mast cells release:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mast_cell

My explanation for why antihistamines dont work for the symptoms of POIS is that whats causing the problems is not histamine, but another inflammatory factor released by mast cells. This makes sense since niacin involves the release of pg d2, an inflammatory released by mast cells. We have narrowed many peoples problems down to an issue with mast cells/ pg d2, and several people on here are adequately treated with Niacin. Many of us though, dont get to where we need to with niacin,( I am one of them). It seems that trying to get a hold of Ketofiten might be the answer, especially for this in constant POIS. Just some thoughts on the issue...

I Am seeing my allergist soon, and am going to ask him for a prescription of Ketotifen tablets, and will try to get a hold of it.

Intersting informstion haicat. Let us know how it goes!

WITHOUT RESEARCH THERE WILL BE NO CURE!
Sessions 5 to 9 days, mostly Flu-like, joints, digestion problems, light cognitive.
Niacin has changed my lif though, now 1 day MAX.
Somewhere in this interaction with Niacin is the answer!

haidcat, antihistamines do work for some of us to a decent extent. Just a reminder that our summary list of the treatments that have yielded significant POIS symptom reduction is here: https://sites.google.com/site/poiswebsite/test-page/successful-methods
Taking ginger tea, no wheat, fenugreek+green tea/garlic, saw palmetto, niacin, boswellia, huperzine, B complex and nutmeg. See my treatment summary post for more info: http://poiscenter.com/forums/index.php?topic=81.msg3513#msg3513
