Deep fried food worsens POIS

Now that boswellia considerably reduces my POIS symptoms I can clearly notice that deep fried food makes my POIS symptoms far worse. It starts the day after I've eaten it and it can last several days or more. Especially the fibromyalgia flares up again, which is otherwise suppressed by the boswellia.

I've also had quite painful inflamed gums that occurred regularly and now I can finally link that also to deep fried food. Each time it coincides with eating deep fried food, also starting the day after and lasting several days or more.

I think it's because in deep frying often vegetable oils are used which are high in polyunsaturated fat and these can promote inflammation, especially when heated. I think it wouldn't give problems if the food is deep fried in oils which have a relatively low amount of polyunsaturated fat, these oils are much more stable and less prone to oxidize and form harmful substances. Although the food musn't be pre-fried in oil high in polyunsaturated fat to begin with, as fries are often pre-fried for example.

I think vegetable oils high in polyunsaturated fat are best to be avoided altogether as much as possible in the diet. The same goes for hydrogenated oils, which are used in margarine and frozen pizza for example.

I found your post very interesting -- and I bet you've hit the nail on the head!

My understanding is that any oil -- polyunsaturated, hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated -- when used at very high heat for deep-frying --  incites inflammation.  The high heat changes the chemistry of the oil, and reacts with the food being deep-fried to form "glycotoxins," which are known to be inflammatory.  These glycotoxins can inflame the skin, arteries, joints, cartilage, blood vessels, and other places in the body.

Many of the symptoms that have been reported by many of you sound like symptoms of inflammation (including that "brain fog" -- one of the big curses of POIS).

Staying away from foods that are known to cause inflammation may help ease some of the symptoms of POIS. It's certainly a safe "treatment" to try for a while. There's a lot of information online about anti-inflammatory foods, and about foods that lead to inflammation.

The truth of the matter is that all of us should try to follow anti-inflammatory diets!

I agree all of this must be explained by inflammation.

I am very intrigued recently by this topic, came to it via the croissant diet.
The idea is that linoleic acid (LA, one of the omega6 PUFA) wreaks havoc in the body's metabolism by breaking insulin mechanisms, fat cells and mitochondria and then leads to chronic diseases (arteriosclerosis, diabetes, inflammation, auto immunity, ...)
LA is prone to oxidation outside and inside the body.

Linoleic acid can be found in seed oils (sunflower, canola, soybean, ...) or in animals that eat soy/corn (chicken, pork, farmed salmon, ...) that are not Ruminants.

From my personal experience I can say I like KFC (fried chicken + french fries) but I always feel bad after it  :-[

I'm trying to eat low Linoleic acid for a month now and have to say I feel better with more energy. POIS might be better too.

Note that changing your diet might not all lead to immediate results as changes in blood cells need up to 30-60 days to appear and changes in body fat (visceral fat?) can take years.
I'll report back.

What I like about this theory is that it overlaps with a lot of things that some people found useful (auto immune paleo, some kinds of keto or carnivore).
I also like that the chronic torpor theory matches with what some people here have said about the impaired blood flow, detox, whatever that we POISers might have.
I also like that it ties in with mitochondria problems (NADH etc).
LA is a precursor to Arachidonic acid (AA) which is a precursor to prostaglandins (both were mentioned in some of the theories here)
Consuming more omega3 could be done in addition to lowering LA.

Me too. But when I feel bad, I simply…eat more KFC. Then, I feel better! :)

I have to say that avoiding PUFAs for 2 months now and upping saturated fat intake (butter/cheese/beef) has helped me a lot with general well being. Also my POIS is better, but this is always influenced by so many factors. I also eat an egg each day, although they might be a PUFA source these days, even when trying to get organic / free range.
Besides well being improved: I did not lose much weight (2kg) but I think my body composition got better.
