I'm a longtime suffer from terrible POIS, I didn't know about POIS until recently but I've had the symptoms since teenage years.
The symptoms I suffer from are:
? Sneezing
? Brain fog
? Generalised pain
? Depression/anxiety
? Testicular pain/coldness
? Digestion problems
? Muscle twitching
? Suicidality
? Stiffness
? Lack of energy/restful sleep
I do suffer from some of the above in general, but after O everything is 100 times worse. The symptoms remain in an elevated state for 3-4 days and calm down by around 7 days.
Recently I was diagnosed with Pyroluria, a dual deficiency of zinc and vitamin B6. I found that sticking to the supplement regimen for this has helped me, I could manage 1 or 2 O's per week. 3 is definitely stretching it. The supplement regimen is as below.
75mg zinc (as picolinate)
200mg B6 (as pyridoxine hydrochloride)
50mg pyridoxal-5-phosphate (activated B6)
10mg manganese (as gluconate)
The zinc and manganese I take as powders with a glass of effervescent vitamin (has more vitamin B's and extra zinc and magnesium in it) first thing in the morning. The B6 and P5P I take with lunch. I suffered from digestion problems for a long time before this and had to work on optimising how/when to take them to avoid feeling stomach sick.
I find the above supplements help reduce the intensity of around 50-70% of my symptoms.
To help smooth things out, I take:
? 100mg aspirin (1 in the morning after digesting breakfast, 1 before sleep)
? 1 can of red bull (thanks b_jim)
? curcumin if I have any lying around (thanks nightingale)
I've tried a lot of other supplements, too many to remember/list:
Limited help (mostly surpassed by pyroluria protocol above)
? 5-htp
? D-phenylalanine
? L-tyrosine
? Fish oil
No help:
? Olive leaf extract
? Niacin
? Niacinamide
? Saw palmetto
? Anti-histamines
? GABA
If you suspect you have pyroluria too, please see a doctor who specialises in functional medicine or orthomolecular medicine. They will ask you to submit a sample for urinary pyrrole testing and work out a treatment plan for you if the diagnosis is confirmed.
The protocol is specific for each person and varies according to body weight/copper toxicity etc.
Good luck
