Centralization is convenient, but it means you have to observe laws of all countries at the same time. If the central site is down or blocked for you, everything is down or blocked for you.

I get what you're saying, that it could be blocked, but fortunately, it's very unlikely for a normal country to block us. However, it is possible for someone to have an accidental technical problem when trying to sign up. But blocked by a country? Very unlikely, and even if it was blocked, there are very easy ways to circumvent said block (country blocks don't work actually). Anyway, just search "bypass block" or something like that if your country is overzealous with blocks. (Gee, I said the word 'block' enough didn't I).

Please. Please, none of this... =/

Hi Nightingale. Thanks for your words, of calm AND support.

Sometimes it's hard to be calm, I think we can all say that.

Although the situation of the forum is complex, it's only that way because there's really no-one taking charge and doing the work required, work that I used to do.
And I appreciate the responses to help.

I've been stuck trying to think about the best way to allow people to help out and move forward with the forum. One problem is that just about ANY helper would have to have "powers" over the forum. So I'm trying to find the safest form to do this.

I think that the simplest one thing that could be done that would go a LONG way to opening up the forum is to have someone revise and filter out the real registrees from the spammers. Al messages that arrive for approval are identical except for thier username. And there are thousands in the inbox at this moment. This is why I asked for a special and personal EMail to be sent asking for approval, mentioning username.. These mails are easier to detect, and can point in the direction for approval. Every week, the ones that aren't approved are erased.

It's a relatively simple task, but at the moment, the mailbox is tied to the administrator. There should be a simple soultion to that.

If that simple task could be done, we could begin receiving more members safely.

As it is, the forum is open to present members, so what is missing in that area is just to stimulate and promote convesation. This is a task that requires time, energy and creativity.

Somewhere in this interaction with Niacin is the answer!

Hi Vistor, good to see you.

Thanks, I remmeber you mentioned this once before. At that time we had an earlier version of the forum that didn't have the capacity for "questions" and it required hard coding of that mecanism.

But now with the new rev level, 20, I think, it comes with that capability. We already have two questions that require answering on the signup page. Not sure how the bots get past them.

At one point I screened and blocked the scanner bots. There are usually about 2 to 5 new per day. (Maybe not new, but with changed IPs.) I also had a link to a  spammer database that marked al known spammers. (and reported new ones). Thos two things helped a lot, made the work manageable. But with this new rev we don't have those tools. Just haven't been able to get to it.

But thanks for the hint.
Hi Daveman,

Thanks. Good to see you too.

The two questions that require answering contain their answer in the question now. This might be the case for bot infiltration. The most clever bots should attempt to infiltrate by inserting words from the question, especially words in caps or inside quotes. If I have to write the bot, I would have tried to insert words from the question and words from the result of googling the question.

On my forum I have only one question for registration. No captcha at all. The question is "What is the result of adding up fo-ur and three?". For now zero bot penetration... Forum has comparable popularity to poiscenter, according to alexa.com. So popularity aspect is not the reason of low bot penetration.
