Medical treatment !
« on: December 23, 2013, 02:15:58 PM »
Has anybody here ever received good advice or medication that works from a doctors office or hospital? I am not sure if Niacin is having the same effect that it did. Sometimes it works, sometimes no. I know there are many theories out there, the main ones being, neurological, Auto-immune, and even circulation or heart abnormalities. Has anyone gone to the doctors office and actually received medicine or treatment that has worked for them? I went to a new doctor yesterday, and although she seemed stumped by it all, she listened and made suggestions of the cause which were not psychological. She also said that because not enough research has been made and the fact that these symptoms are not more normal, that I would have to go to a larger city, perhaps Jacksonville, Fl. or Atlanta, GA.

Yes, norethisterone (synthetic progesterone). I recommend you read Dr Dexters medical paper on POIS. This can be obtained by the forum administrator Daveman. If you search this forum for the topic I started "have you taken progesterone for POiS" you will see some personals sharings of taking the medication. I found it works well in combination with Niacin (as Daveman has set out).

I was miserable taking norethisterone, so I stopped after 4 days.
10 years of significant POIS-reduction, treatment consisting of daily (365 days/year) testosterone patches.

TRT must be checked out carefully with your doctor due to fertility, cardiac and other risks.

40+ years of severe 4-days-POIS, married, raised a family, started/ran a business

Jmari,

I for one am very dissolusioned by doctors. I have the same doctor for 30 years. He is generally a good guy, but limited like many general practitioners by the reality that they can't know of every disease. Even the NORD website lists so many rare ones including ours that are being researched.

I am so happy that finally this condition will receive the research it deserves. 3 months back, I had an appointment with my GP for a check up related to an ear problem. I decided to mention POIS. I had previously explained to him and asked for help - about 15 years previously - for exploring these symptoms and their impact on my life, also having previously explained to him in my 20's. That led to my 3 months hospitalization in the 80's with a nervous breakdown in my early 20's. (My heart goes out to guys in their 20's with this. At least I could avoid "O" more as I got older.)

15 years back, my GP agreed to have me referred to a general physician who found nothing physically wrong. They suggested it was depression, but I know that because 3/4 days after "O", my health had always improved significantly, that it wasn't a depression lead, it was depression because of something else happening.

When I then mentioned POIS 3 months back, he pretty much brushed over what I was saying, and I didn't push, as I realise, without evidence, most GP's aren't interested. My prior history of being hospitalized with depression had me boxed off in his mind.

That is what is potentially great about what you have all created through this forum. We are going to hopefully have some evidence for what happens to us at what should be one of the most enjoyable parts of life, but it has had the reverse effect.

Ps, sorry if I am rattling on a bit too much here, but it means a lot to be able to share with folks who understand, when I'd assumed I was alone with this crap. Peace and wellness for the holidays gents!
