In difference to suggestions, this area is best used to note any technical problems or short-commings.

There is a small bug in the new version of SMF that effects Internet Explorer 8, we have the latest production version.
This bug causes the post to jump when one writes near the bottom of a post that is long enough that it is scrolling. The scroll funtion stops scrolling, although one can write below the exposed window, obviously the writing is blind, and it jumps with each letter typed.
The solution for the time being is to use compatibility mode when using Explorer 8. This resolves the problem.
As soon as there is a more elegant fix available I'll install it. (And/or take a look at the code myself)
Thanks for your understanding.
-
I just "jumped" again, thanks for reminding me of COMPATIBILITY VIEW.
That can be found under TOOLS in ie8, at the top right of your screen.
-
When I try to send PM's, the text box is jumping up and down, it's like my downward key is stuck (but it's not)
Anyone else experiencing this?
-
Try the fix that Demo mentions above.
turn ON compatibility mode. Problem solved.
-
in which section of the forum is more correct to describe my symptoms?
-
hi,
i'm waiting for the answer of the administrator
thanks
-
pep, here is the best place: http://poiscenter.com/forums/index.php?topic=81.0
-
Yes, Pep, that is the right place that Vincent Marcus mentions.
I did respond, not sure why you didn't get it.
The administrator EMail is loaded with more than 60 SPAM applications per day. so mails sometimes get lost there, but if you want to get more direct attention, a PM (Private Message would be better).
However I sent a response one or two days after you sent the first request.
Thanks

Hello. Before registering, a few times I have got an IP address that is banned on this forum, and could not read the forum from it. Please make bans not affect reading. Thanks.

I've been experiencing a problem loading this site on chrome and firefox. When I try to load the forum about half the time the page will fail to load and I'll get this message:
Database Error: MySQL server has gone away
File: /home/poiscent/public_html/forums/Sources/Security.php
Line: 279Database Error: MySQL server has gone away
File: /home/poiscent/public_html/forums/Sources/Load.php
Line: 2023
I guess it's just me though since nobody else has said they've had the problem.
-
I haven't had that loading problem with this site in a couple weeks or so.
-
It's coincidental, but happens usually during a back-up. Either when I or the hosting service is doing a backup
the database gets disproportionately busy for a minute or so. If it's a hosting service backup, it could last
a little longer.
Not related to your browsers though.
Thanks for mentioning it.

I erase 1500 blocked Spam attempts per week. COuld happen when I'm doing that too!

I have a question.
How can i make two or more polls in a topic ?
Is it possible ?

No I don't think so, that would be more like a survey..
-
I've seen that again a few weeks ago.

The link to "Naked Scientists POIS Thread" at the main page is a broken link to this forum.

Hey everybody WE'RE BACK.
Slight problem with access! Took this long to get a decent response from support.
Our upgrade was good, but the password to the maintenance area got changed in the process, and I couldn't get access until now to fix the problem.
It's fixed temporarily. It seems the database is too big, which kicks the forum into maintenance mode. I will be weeding out frivolous stuff to help avoid the problem in the future.
-
Thanks MUCH, Daveman, for handling this tech-insanity during your peak workload outside POISCenter!

Yes, this server stuff ain't easy, thanks for putting in the work!

The problem was relatively small, but since the forum upgrade, the hosting service had a different ássword in the maintenance area, so I couldn't get access to fix it. It took me most of a day talking with support to get them to reset my password.
Demo has a "tinyURL somewhere of a link to our back-up googe groups forum, if we ever have problems like this again. A means to keep communications open even though this one might go down.
Hopefully it will be stable now. However I do have to go in and prune the database.

Hi, does anybody know where to find the "View the most recent posts" button. I only have the "Show unread posts since last visit" & "Show new replies to your posts" buttons. Thanks.

Try this one Chris: http://poiscenter.com/forums/index.php?&action=recent

Thanks for the link Prancer. If it wasn't you, i would definitely have missed at least 10 posts. The ''Show unread posts since last visit'' isn't working very well to me and sometimes isn't working at all!

Since the upgrade, it seems impossible to hide one's email address from being public. The only reason that's a problem is because surely they'll be harvested for spam. For me, it's not a problem because I used a temporary/throwaway email address (which has a lot of spam because of this, but since it's a throwaway it doesn't matter). But for those who use their personal one, the spam might become a problem. Before the upgrade, the email address was hidden by default.

So you are telling me that even now that I have chosen my email to be private, you can enter my profile and view it ? (Basically I didn't choose it, my email, as you said, is hidden by default.)
I entered as a guest and my email was still hidden.. Your email is hidden from me too.. How can you view them ?

Yes, as an example, go to http://poiscenter.com/forums/index.php?topic=25.msg14051#msg14051
The white envelope icon on the left side is where it appears. The settings don't seem to fix it.
I should add that the white envelope icon is a link, which "points" to the email address as a "mailto:" address. So someone can see the email addresses, depending on the browser, by simply right clicking and then clicking "copy email address". It is like this for every member, and is visible whether logged in or not.

Yes, I 've seen it now. You can only view it in someone's post, under his username and/or profile picture. However, when viewing the profile the email hides, so you can only view it when someone posts. Right click copy email address, or right click open in a new tab, or simply just click the email icon and it automatically gives you the email address.
Well that's something not good for many users that use their real email address, because they lose their privacy and become vulnerable to unwanted emails. I think I'm going to change my email for now and use a disposable as you do, cause I don't want my real email to be accesible by every person (and I don't mean only by users here), but by guests too!

I'm getting problems posting links using the url tag for hyperlinks over the last few days. It's giving me an internal error. Like for example using this link https://poiscenter.com/forums/index.php?topic=2885.0 and this title: Is POIS associated with an Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction? Also have problems with other links, probably has something to do with the url code itself. Getting a few internal errors in a row disconnects me from poiscenter. Why did this become a problem these last few days, I haven't been able to post anything with url codes since then.

Muon, do you have the same issues if you use a different browser, like Firefox instead of Chrome, or if you log in with a different device ?
If yo do not have this problem with another browser or device, then the problem is in the browser, so empty this browser cache AND erase its cookies, and it will resolve the issue.
A complete stop of your device and a reboot may also help, in case the above does not work.
-
Thank you, Quantum.

Hi Quantum,
I have tried emptying browser caches
Tried 3 different browsers: Internet Explorer, Chrome and Opera giving me the same result.
And tried different devices including my mobile phone.
Trying to modify my existing threads by inserting a hyperlink gives me a 500 internal server error. When getting this message like three times in a row will result into an ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT which will prevent me from connecting to the website at all, got no problems with other websites though.
I also flushed my DNS, that didn't help either.
I believe it all started when I had to switch off the main power in my apartment because I had to fix some electronic connections.
This is such a silly problem.
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator at webmaster@poiscenter.com to inform them of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
The issue occurs when using the insert hyperlink code above the smileys or type it manually and place an arbitrary link plus text then it will give me this error whenever I press Preview or Save after placing the url code.
How do I enter the server error log?

Muon, we’ll need to show tech support a screenshot.
Please see your IM for further info.
IM me your screenshot please.

Muon, I sent tech support your message to Quantum above.

I just wanted to modify my thread with text (no command codes used) https://poiscenter.com/forums/index.php?topic=2545.0 and got this internal 500 error again. Is there a limit for the amount of characters you can use for one post? I have the feeling this is the case and if so, how do I see when I'm over this limit? I'm able to post in other threads so it's probably thread specific.
Edit: Giving replies within that thread works just fine, the problem is related to the first post of that thread.

Hi Muon,
Maximum characters per post is 40000 , so I doubt this is the issue here ( your post has 20613 characters, currently)
There may be a problem with this specific post, so you may want to re-post it entirely down the thread, or you can split it in 2 different posts.
You can also consider to make a test by creating a new thread with this same original post, and see if it behaves normally. If this new post is functional, let me know, and I can transfer all of the replies of the original thread to this new thread, and delete the old one.
-
I've also tried to post a whole new topic but it gave Internal Server Error. Frustrating.
Edit: Apparently I have exceeded the word limit or something and after modification I was able to post it.
