Title: Doc said I have hypothyroidism?
Post by: Vincent M on May 05, 2011, 02:35:36 AM
I went to a rheumatologist yesterday and he said that I probably have hypothyroidism and he gave me a prescription for a thyroid hormone called Levothyroxine. I guess the good thing is that if that's what I have I'll be able to tell pretty quickly if the medicine is working or not. I'm still skeptical though so I'm not sure if I will take it or not. I read a lot about it online and it seems to be making an awful lot of people go bald. He didn't take a blood test or anything he just based his decision from my symptoms...I'm not sure if I should take the levothyoroxine or not especially since I think I've been making progress with the fenugreek & garlic.

I don't think I'm going to take it at least until I've fully tested both fenugreek and relora. Has anyone else taken any kind of thyroid medication before?

Hi Vincent,

I don't know why the doctor didn't ordered a blood test for hormone level. In my opinion you should make such tests before taking any hormonal treatment.
Based only on symptoms is risky to take such medication, in my opinion blood test should say more clearly if you suffer from hypothyroidism.
Have you checked Internet sites about hypothyroidism? this might help.

This is a quote from Wikipedia:
Quote
The only validated test to diagnose primary hypothyroidism, is to measure thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (T4)
I don't know why the rheumatologist didn't sent you to an endocrinologist.
You should check one. He should be more competent in such diseases.

But this post is only an advice, and I am not a doctor. You should do whath you think is better.

How did you describe your symptoms to the doctor. It would appear that this is his only reference. I guess as emi_b says, he really should have done more in depth testing.

In my honest opinion, Vincent, you are probably suffereing more from sexual exhaustion than from POIS. A normal POIS sufferer just cannot have more than 1 orgasm in 2 or 3 days at BEST. It's more normal 1 orgasm in 5 days.

Also, it may be that you have some imbalance that makes you unusually horny, similar to the same thing that women have(don't remember what it's called, I'm in day 2!!), which Dr. Waldinger also studies.

So have a look at those things too. There may be something that could help you there as well.

I want to say that if one has POIS, some symptoms of POIS might match with other diseases, and be wrongly diagnosed.
The best option to exclude them is to make the test (or tests) that can exclude or confirm that supposed disease (in Vincent case hypothyroidism), to be sure that it is more likely POIS. And taking hormonal medication wrongly can cause unwanted effects I suppose.

Regarding sexual exhaustion, I found somewhere (I don't remember where) that sexual exhaustion it is a disorder found in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and I don't know if it is recognized in medical literature.

I agree entirely with your comments about the potential for doctors to try to treat for more common ailments based on symptoms rather than POIS.

However regarding sexual exhaustion, one can see how heavy and constant arousal could lead to very frequent masturbation.  So that looking to causes and cures for whatever causes the constant arousal would make sense. If these work, then one could reduce their masturbation frquency and come to recently determine if one has POIS or sexual exhaustion.

I don't see the two as the same. There's a lot of reason to beleive that SE is caused by excessive ejaculation, whereas this is not the case for POIS. A single isolated orgasm causes POIS symptoms without associated systemic exhaustion  but beyond that there is evidence that POIS has a cause based in the auto-immune system. Where it may be based on deficiencies of the whole reproductive "control system", these failure are rather inate that "auto-imposed".

Also, recent posts at various levels (not only SE etc) seem to indicate that it is possible to have parallel conditions, or perhaps semi-dormant conditions that are awoken by POIS. So while it is difficult, it is probably very worthwhile to delimit the potential parallel afflictions so that one can get down to business.

I'm pretty sure I have POIS. I'm thinking I may also have SE and hypothroidism at the same time however. It's complicated and my mom is putting some pressure on me to take the thyroid hormone so I'm not thinking at my best here. I thought hypothyroidism might be the cause of my POIS, but now I'm not so sure. Thanks for the advice guys.

Good luck VM.  I agree with both Emi_b and Dave.  I didn't know I had POIS until I got married at age 24.  For the first 6 months it was a vicious cycle of feeling lousy and resorting to sex because it made me feel a little better for a few moments.  POIS seemed to interfere with my body's natural ON/OFF arousal cycle and the dial was stuck at ON.  Even still, once a day was pretty much the max.  2 to 3 times a day would have put me in the hospital.  I'm now at once per week in order to be functional.  So I can see why you would want to so often, but still don't know how

Vincent,

Maybe you should try to take the hormone, since it was prescribed by a specialist, maybe it will work and you might have both conditions.

Maybe it will help you, but again my opinion is that you should do a hormonal blood test before taking it. Only to be sure.

As an update to this topic I actually didn't have a prescription for the thyroid hormone after all- it was actually a script to get blood work done (stupid me). I did get the blood tests done - it was for lyme, thyroid hormone levels, and something else. I'll post the results when I get them.

Okay my doctor got the results and everything was "normal" except my thyroid stimulating hormone was a tad high so my doc gave me some thyroid hormone to try. I took the first pill today since it's such a small amount (0.05mg) that i probably won't even notice and also I don't have health insurance for much longer so I've gotta try something. I'm also starting a trial of ginko biloba at the same time and will stop taking the ginko after two weeks to see if any new changes were due to the ginko or due to the thyroid hormone.

I had a low thyroid level too. I tried Thyrax (levothyroxine) for a few weeks. Man I get sick! I couldn't sleep for months. I had to take sleep pills. And the Thyrax didn't help against POIS.

yeah i feel like such shit right now i got these weird prickly slight pains all over my body for like 3 hrs and i got kinda shaky and i'm still shaky a bit and my heart is beating faster than normal and it's hard for me to stay calm and my throat is getting kinda hot. I'm not going to take conventional meds again for a long while.

I took a .05mg pill of levothyroxine about 4 hrs ago and i still feel messed up.

Actually i think it's starting wear off now. I think I'll try it again in a week but without fenugreek and gingko biloba in my system. Also i'll cut the pill in half.

thanks sameer. I'm really nervous about taking this med and I'm terrified of permanent side effects such as hair loss or thyroid gland damage. But maybe I really do have hypothyroidism in addition to POIS. I was doing a lot better on funegreek + garlic, but I'm still not able to get a job or go to college so my mom is really pushing me to take the hormone. I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts on the matter, especially if you have experience with thyroid disease or thyroid hormone medication.

Hello guys, my doctor prescribed me the same medicament levothyroxine  cause my blod tests show that I have hight level of TSH and a Hight level of thyroperoxidase antibody TPO.
So ther's 100% relation between thyro?de dysfinction and POIS. Vincent could please tell does the treatment worked for you. Cheers
