Title: Consistently Low White Blood Cells Count
Post by: BuckarooBanzai88 on August 05, 2020, 02:45:15 AM
I was just wondering if anyone else has consistently low WBC count.

Maybe add a "I don't know" option to the poll? :-) Because I never checked it I think. This is a valuable option to see if people are interested in your poll. (I am)

What's the exact medical check result that you got? (also compared to the other values related to blood)

Thanks Hopeoneday for finding the neutropenia correlation!
They could be used up during an infection. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutrophil#Degranulation

Low neutrophil count + high lactoferrin. Check wiki link.

Problems with sugar/refined carbs in POISers, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutrophil#Structure:

"Neutrophils have a preference to engulf refined carbohydrates[16][17][18] (from ingested glucose, fructose, sucrose, honey and orange juice[16]) over bacteria.[16] In 1973 Sanchez et al. found that the neutrophil phagocytic capacity to engulf bacteria is affected when simple sugars are digested,[16] and that fasting strengthens the neutrophils' phagocytic capacity to engulf bacteria.[16] However, the digestion of normal starches has no effect. It was concluded that the function, and not the number, of phagocytes in engulfing bacteria was altered by the ingestion of sugars.[16] In 2007 researchers at the Whitehead Institute of Biomedical Research found that given a selection of sugars, neutrophils engulf some types of sugar preferentially."

They produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) and use oxygen in the process. This could be checked in blood.

Or something might be interfering with the signaling that is related to neutrophil differentiation/granulopoiesis. I've also seen a few POISers with high monocytes. Here is the lineage:

Some molecules described in the article above might show abnormal levels.

Alpha-1-Antitrypsin, Quant
67 mg/dL (Low)
Reference Range:100 - 190

Can affect neutrophil function. I've already checked elastase by the way which was normal.

Megakaryocyte...that sounds like an obscure pokemon to me.

Poll needs to have more options. Like I don't have a low WBC (measured it once or multiple times). And I got low WBC count but only measured it once. I have never measured WBC. I measured a low WBC at least once but other times it was normal. I also need to change my vote by the way.

Hi BB88,

Thanks to HopeOneDay and Nanna1, it had been noted that many POISers show neutropenia, a low count of neutrophils - see https://poiscenter.com/forums/index.php?topic=3151.msg34280#msg34280 (https://poiscenter.com/forums/index.php?topic=3151.msg34280#msg34280) .

Neutropenia is an abnormally low concentration of neutrophils (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutrophil) (a type of white blood cell (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_blood_cell)) in the blood.[4] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutropenia#cite_note-4) Neutrophils make up the majority of circulating white blood cells and serve as the primary defense against infections (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infection) by destroying bacteria (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacteria) ( quoted from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutropenia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neutropenia) )

I came across that!  Very cool, but I'm afraid with a sample size of six people we can't really draw any meaningful conclusions there.  In this poll, with a sample size of 5, the result is inverted in favor of low WBC being less common.
